When you were a teenager and still at school, say 14-16 years old, was there a particular lipstick that every lipstick-wearing girl in your Year was obsessed with? For my year group, the shade we all wore was ‘Heather Shimmer’ from Rimmel. So when I spotted it at a discounted price on the ASOS website, I immediately ordered one for myself and one for my best friend; we were besties back in the 90s & remain so to this day ?.
We weren’t really allowed to wear makeup at school but as I often saw in my decade as a teacher, this rule was unofficially relaxed a little for pupils in Years 10 & 11. The key was not to go over the top ?. I think the finish of this formula was why we got away with it; while the shade looks like it’s going to be quite dark, the relatively sheer finish softens it quite a lot.
The packaging has changed quite a bit since the 1995-7. I seem to remember it being a medium brown and the tube being squared rather than circular. The fragrance definitely hasn’t changed though! Fortunately it’s not a smell that bothers my Chronic Migraine brain; it’s a slightly sweet, nostalgic & old-fashioned smell. I like it ?.
The above shows how Heather Shimmer swatches on my very fair skin (MAC NW15). I can see why we all loved it; it’s super easy to wear. I’d probably use it with a lipliner these days – NYX Coffee or Mauve would go beautifully. It turns out my taste hasn’t changed that much. I don’t own any shades that match exactly but Heather Shimmer sits nicely along side my current favourites:
Nostalgic purchases can be risky; there’s always the chance that stuff isn’t as fabulous as you remember it. But I’m pleased to own Heather Shimmer again. It’s been a long time since my bestie & I wore matching lipstick; it’s time we tried it again ?.
Did you have a lipstick that you adored in your teens? Did you perhaps rebel against the shade your peers were wearing?
Wishing you good luck & happy days,
Kindra x
