Fall Simmering Potpourri Recipes
Hello! I’m back with some of my blogging friends today for our 10 Minute Decorating series! This month we’re starting to focus on fall decor with some quick and easy ideas to inspire you for the season.
Aside from Christmas, fall is my favorite season/holiday to decorate for and I can’t wait to get it all done! If you’re following along on Instagram, you may have seen a few fall touches that I’ve added to the kitchen, but I really haven’t had much time to get going yet. We just returned from vacation last week and the kids started back to school yesterday, so things have been rather crazy around here.
One of the quickest and easiest ways to get my house feeling like fall, is to make up some fall simmering potpourri. It only takes a few minutes and it really does make the house smell heavenly. It’s also kind of fun to experiment with different ingredients – so play around with what you have and see what you can come up with!
I’ll give you a couple of my favorite recipes but don’t be too concerned with the measurements – I always seem to be playing around with it.
PUMPKIN SPICE POTPOURRI
- 2 cups apple cider or apple juice {you could always use water too}
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
- 3-4 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tbsp. whole cloves
- 1 tbsp. pumpkin pie spice
- 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
- 1/2 an apple or dried apple slices
APPLE PIE POTPOURRI
- 1 small apple thinly sliced
- 2 cups liquid {apple cider, apple juice, or water}
- 1 tbsp. whole cloves
- 3-4 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tbsp. nutmeg
For both recipes, add all of the ingredients to a small sauce pan and stir. Bring to a gentle boil and then reduce heat to low. Continuously add more liquid {either cider or water} as needed and do not allow to dry up. I’ll usually stir it up about once an hour to get the scent going. You can also use a crockpot for the potpourri instead of the stove top method although you may need to increase the recipe size depending on the size of your crockpot. I have also used the small dip-sized crockpot; however, I found that the scent was not as strong.
I will re-use the mixture for up to a week until it’s either not looking too good or doesn’t smell as strong – just keep it stored in the fridge in an airtight container if you’re not using it. You can add citrus peels or apple cores as well as the week goes on or top up the spices a bit. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do and hopefully it will put you in the fall spirit!
