Elizabeth Banks on Directing Pitch Perfect 2: “I Like Being the Boss”

Who’s going to see Pitch Perfect 2 this weekend? I attended an advanced screening a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. If you’re a fan of the first film I promise you won’t be disappointed – it’s two hours of pure, unadulterated joy.

Elizabeth Banks, who produced and starred in the original movie, directed the sequel, which makes its release even more exciting. Because how often do we get to see films about women that were made by women? Elizabeth has been on the promotional trail all month, and has repeatedly been asked about her decision top step into the director’s chair. I love how she approached the question when talking to The Wall Street Journal:

“I like being the boss. I’m ambitious about that and I’m OK admitting it… One of the reasons I started producing and directing was because I felt underused by my industry and felt I had more to offer. Your career is very out of your control for so long. I finally feel like I have just a teeny, tiny, teeny, tiny, little bit more control.”

There’s a fantastic documentary called

Miss Representation, which I included in my last Netflix roundup, that explores how poorly women are represented in mainstream media. And the only way things will begin change is if more women are given creative control in Hollywood.

So let’s hope the success of Pitch Perfect (which was originally produced on a tight budget of $17 million and went on to make over $200 million worldwide) opens the doors for more female-driven films!

Are you going to see Pitch Perfect 2 this weekend? Let me know if you enjoy it…
