Meet Matt(e) Nude – The Balm Matte Eyeshadow Palette Review
Here’s the thing. I HATE cardboard packaging. What is the point? Is it waterproof? NO! Does it look and feel nice? No! But still, there are endless being products being released all the time in cardboard packaging even though they are rather expensive!
But…I couldn’t resist this release by The Balm. The Balm reminds me of Benefit…it’s a cute quirky brand although I haven’t really tried it much. Meet Matt(e) Nude is an all Matte (obviously) eyeshadow palette named after various Mattes. It reminds me of the game from Never Mind The Buzzcocks (bonus points if you know what I am talking about). Thing is this baby was £37.50 on ASOS and other sites which is too steep…I found it on Strawberrynet with my 10% loyalty discount etc. I ended up paying about £22 for it.
There are 9 paraben and fragrance free shades in this palette. Doesn’t it look like a Ladybird book?! I don’t actually hate this case entirely but I would still rather it was a proper plastic case.
Here are the shades and ingredients for you. Inside is a large mirror which is handy and no brushes, thankfully. They would only be rubbish anyway.
And so we have the shades. As much as I love glitter and metallics there’s no doubt that mattes look good on me – they help me shape my eye, they make my make up look elegant and understated. My eyes just look nice wearing mattes even if my eye prefers to pick up the glitters….
There is a mixture of ‘neutrals’ in this palette of varying depths. There are warms and cools.
Shades are:
Matt Johnson – Dark slate grey. This Matt works in law and goes to work in a suit every day.
Matt Garcia – This is a warm medium to dark cinnamon brown. This Matt does salsa in the evenings and likes fajitas.
Matte Malloy – Pure white. This matte is a simple church going, polite young man.
Matte Rosen – Medium toned warm poo like brown. Matte Rosen wears patterned shirts and likes retro curtains.
Matt Wood – Neutral dark chocolate brown. This Matte is a carpenter and likes oak.
Matt Singh – Peach. This Matt is a pharmacist who loves his mum.
Matt Abdul – Mid grey taupe. My favourite colour.
Matte Lombardi – Muted yellow-mustard. Useful colour even though it looks ugly in the pan. This matte likes to cook.
Matte Hung – Mid warm grey dove purple. Don’t know what this matt likes to do, but he likes to ‘hang’.

Pigmentation looks patchy on my swatch but I have to say the texture of these colours i’ve got are very soft and rich. Probably the chalkiest colour was the white but really, it’s lovely to use when actually applying it with a brush on to the eye. My favourite colours were Matte Abdul and Hung so I guess I naturally have a thing for the cool taupe like shades, although I am partial to a warm brown too sometimes.
As well as being pigmented and smooth, the colour last well without a primer but even better with one.
I can’t complain about this palette at all – the shades are generously sized too so I am happy with this as an every day palette. I suppose the shades are quite an unusual mix of warms and cools – I wonder if they could have been even more complementary and cohesive then they are (ie. more obvious grouping) and many of the shades are quite deep – it would be nice to have some more light or light colours.

You can buy it here – I can’t see it on Strawberrynet any more unfortunately for the discount price I got it for. I would say it’s worth about £30 though!
