Crafting A Perfect Sick Day

Just last week we had the first round of stomach bug to hit our home in 2015. There are so many things that I don’t love about sick days including the ungodly quantity of laundry that has to be done (twelve loads in one day, to be exact) and the way my mama heart hurts when I can’t make it all better for my littles. But as I walked through that day – thankfully, it was just one – I realized there are also things that I enjoy about sick days.

Sick days are slow.

When the day starts out with a sick someone, we immediately clear the calendar. Lessons are rescheduled. Playdates are cancelled. Errands delayed. A day that might have been full to the brim is suddenly empty and ready to be filled in its own special, slow way. Those slow days are restorative for all. Little ones that are ill have time to heal and others just get a day of rest for the soul.

Sick days are simple.

Sick days aren’t a time for anything complicated. We keep food simple; a hot bowl of bone broth and a warm slice of buttered toast are sick day staples. We keep the activities simple with plenty of time under blankets on the sofa or playing quiet, familiar games at the table.

Sick days are creative.

At least they are in my home. With a full day free, even the most sick among us is likely to wind up at the table making something. Sick days aren’t the time for fancy supplies or following complicated DIYs, but slow simple open-ended art is the perfect way to help little ones quiet their bodies and dive into some creative making.

I’m curious, what do sick days look like in your house? How do you keep things simple, slow and creative as your little ones heal? Let me know in the comments or toss me an email – danielle{at}craftingconnections{dot}net – I’d love to hear!
