Brooklyn Chocolate Cake

Last month we attended a party that served the most decadent cake I've ever tasted. On the surface, it looked like a basic chocolate cake, but I found out it was actually legendary recipe from Ebinger's Bakery in Brooklyn (which opened in 1898 and closed in 1972.) Coincidentally, this article (and recipe) from NPR came across my feed a few days after the party, which was obviously a sign that I had to try to recreate this at home. The process is definitely not a casual baking endeavor, but if done right, the results are simply phenomenal.
