Free DIY Furniture Plans // How to Build The Pod Twin Bunk Bed with Storage

So it would seem that I am indeed publishing yet another set of free plans to build a super cool bunk bed today. I think that makes it certifiable that I have a complete and utter case of bunk bed syndrome and an ever lasting love for all of that built in functionality slash fort making potential that comes along with. I am the oldest of all my siblings, and I have several, but the two who lived with me growing up didn't arrive on the scene until I was eight and then ten years old. Naturally, bunk bed living wasn't precisely in the cards for me. I suppose I live out my childhood dreams and wishes through my own boys and this site, so bunk bed and play house plans shall be plentiful... Hopefully that works for you gorgeous people, yahoo.

Cut the pieces for the Posts, Cleats and Front and Back Rails. Attach a Cleat to the bottom edge of a Rail using 2” Wood Screws (the bottom of the Rail and Cleat should be flush with each other). Clamp each Rail/Cleat “set” into place as shown, leaving a 1-1/2” space on each end for the Side Rails. After making sure that everything is completely square and aligned, use a 7/16” Drill Bit to drill through the Rail, Cleat, and Bed Post. You should have two holes on each end for the Bolts. Fasten with Carriage Bolts and Tighten. This step should be done a total of 4 times – twice for the top bed (front and back) and twice for the bottom bed (front and back).

Cut the pieces for the Side Rails. With the Kreg jig set for 1-1/2” material, drill pocket holes in each end of the Side Rails. Assemble as shown with glue and 2-1/2” pocket screws. This step should be done a total of 4 times – twice for the top bed and twice for the bottom bed.

Cut the pieces for the Slats. Attach the Slats to the Cleats with 1-1/2” wood screws, laying out the Slats with spacing as shown. Repeat this step for both the top and the bottom bed.

Cut the pieces for the optional Fill Pieces. With the Kreg jig set for 3/4” material, drill pocket holes in the ends of each Fill Piece. Assemble as shown (with pocket holes facing the ground) with glue and 1-1/4” pocket screws.

Cut the Corner Panels, Handles A, and Handle B. Use edge banding if desired.

Corner Panels, cut out 8 total:

Handles A, cut out 3 total:

Handle B, cut out 1 total:

With the Kreg jig set for 3/4” material, drill pocket holes where noted. Assemble the Front and Back Sides as shown with glue and 1-1/4” pocket screws.

Front Side:

Back Side:

Attach the Front and Back Sides to the assembled bedframe. Remove one carriage bolt at a time and use the 7/16” drill bit to redrill through the original drilled hole, now through the Front and Back Sides. Insert the carriage bolt once again into the drilled hole, now securing the Cleat, Rail, Post, and Side together as one unite. Repeat for all carriage bolts.

Cut the pieces for the Headboards and Footboards. Use edge banding if desired. With the Kreg jig set for 3/4” material, drill pocket holes in the ends of each Headboard and Footboard. Assemble as shown with glue and 1-1/4” pocket screws.

Cut the pieces for the Shelves. With the Kreg jig set for 3/4” material, drill pocket holes in the ends of each Shelf. Assemble as shown with glue and 1-1/4” pocket screws.

Cut out the piece for the Ladder. Use edge banding if desired.

Ladder Front:

Ladder Back:

With the Kreg jig set for 3/4” material, drill pocket holes in the top and bottom of the Ladder as shown.

Assemble as shown with glue and 1-1/4” pocket screws. Make sure the pocket holes face the inside of the Bed.
