Bright and Airy in Madrid

Four years ago, when Margarita and Antonio found this apartment in Madrid, Spain, they knew it would be perfect for their growing family – after a few renovations, that is. But because the apartment had been built in 1932 and designed by renowned Spanish architect, Antonio Palacios, it was an historically protected building, and so the challenge was to respect the apartment’s historical roots while updating it for a modern family. So the couple called upon Nimú, a little design studio in Madrid run by Fayette Proper and Margarita Antes, who both specialize in working with such spaces. They restored all the windows, floors and doors and then worked on the furnishings. Nimú paired vintage and high-end design objects with more inexpensive IKEA buys. The result is just what the family was looking for – a bright, relaxed home that doesn’t feel too modern or minimal. -Amy
