Today I’ll be writing about a subject I know way too well and one I’ve been meaning to write about for a long time now. I’ll be telling you what I’ve learned from my experience with dry & dehydrated skin over the years.

I didn’t always have dry skin; on the contrary, I used to have oily skin till the age of 18. Actually a little while before turning 18, and after having been through a terrible experience in a personal level, I started noticing huge break outs on my skin. Dryness, redness, itchiness were some of my symptoms and sometimes my skin looked like I had eczema, all over my face. Of course I went to my dermatologist, and started treating it with pills and creams till I got clean. The problem wasn’t only affecting the face though, but my scalp as well (but we’ll talk about this in another time).

What I’ve learned, over the years, is that in my case, the dryness comes and goes according to the season, my health, and my feelings. When I wasn’t feeling well, when I had stress, when I had stomach problems, my skin reacted. Stress can be really bad for your skin, but there are ways to treat your skin properly so it doesn’t break out so often. So start by going to your dermatologist as well, to tell you what you’re dealing with and how to treat it right, before doing anything else.

It took me years to understand, find the right products, and actually start treating my skin every day, and not only occasionally when I had the break outs. So I hope that you’ll learn from my experience and start treating your skin properly, RIGHT NOW. Don’t wait to do it at a later date/age.

The most important step to treat your dry & dehydrated skin is to ALWAYS keep it moisturized. I’ve noticed, and learned that the best time to moisturize your skin is at night, before you go to sleep, so that the creams can stay on your skin longer and work their magic.

  • Always use a makeup remover, and if your makeup is heavy, don’t use only wipes.
  • Continue by toning your skin with a proper lotion to clean it and prepare it for the next products.
  • After using the lotion, move on to your night serum. It’s a really important step that has REALLY changed my skin, and I never leave it out of my night ritual anymore. The serum will help your cream get more easily absorbed and it will help keep your skin moisturized for more time.
  • After that step, use the cream your dermatologist gave you (or you can use one that is right for your skin. What I like to do is use both creams alternately).
  • Another really important step is to use an eye-cream, under the eyes, and on the crow’s feet. People think that this step is only for older ages, but the truth is that the skin around our eyes is much thinner than on the rest of the face, (it can get wrinkles more easily), so it needs proper moisturizing too. So don’t forget your eye-cream too, especially if you’re over 25!

This is my basic routine to keep my face properly moisturized, and I think that the serum does most of the work. But if you feel like your skin needs more, you can use a day cream as well (with high SPF!) and a lighter serum, before your day cream and your makeup.

From time to time, you can use a scrubbing product (but try to be really gentle, and always pick the right one for your skin!), and a deep moisturizing mask, preferably, one you can wear all night and can be absorbed by your skin while you sleep. Definitely try not to overdo it with these products!

Hope my experience and my tips will be helpful for you.
