2015 Surf Dog Competition to Help Animals in Need


Celebrating a decade of dogged devotion to catching waves and helping paws causes, rad Rovers are getting stoked for the 2015 Surf Dog Competition.

August 1st will be a day for sun, sea, sand and Spots as totally tubular tail-waggers travel to Imperial Beach, California in order to show off their surfing skills in a canine contest hosted again this year by Unleashed by Petco.

For the second straight year Taylor Knox– a surfers Hall of Fame member and proud pet parent to a rescue Chihuahua named Penelope– will help to determine which of the hotdogging Moondoggies will be deemed the day’s winners.

The competition will include heats in the small surf dog, medium surf dog, large surf dog and X-large surf dog divisions, a tandem heat and the finals, followed by an awards ceremony.

Along with cheering for our barking buddies on surfboards, there will be plenty of activities on shore for both people and pets, including:

  • dog adoptions
  • an off-leash play area for canines and a Kid Zone for animal-loving little ones
  • a beginners agility course so dogs can display their dexterity
  • a dog wash
  • vendor booths brimming with pet-themed products
  • a free photo booth (complete with a green screen) and a free video booth so pet parents can preserve the memory of the day for posterity

The official hotel sponsor of this year’s event, Loews Coronado Bay Resort will be offering a special rate for Surf Dog Weekend, and will mark the momentous occasion with a pre-event “Yappy hour” on July 31st.

A happening with a lot of heart, the 2015 Unleashed by Petco Surf Dog Competition will benefit the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, which has been helping companion animals in need since its start in 1880.
