Patchwork Heart Baby Quilt

My daughter’s teacher recently announced that she was having a baby. That day, Penny came home asking if we could make a baby quilt for her. I told her that she had to do some investigating first and find out what colors her teacher was planning on using the in nursery. She came home the very next day with all the details. The room would be mostly white with touches of grey and pink.

She had also decided that we should make a heart quilt. So we started looking through my pink stash and chose a bunch of prints that she liked. She especially liked the fabrics with a little metallic so there are a couple of those in there. Then she decided on solids for the background. We decided to use up all my scraps of various shades of grey to do that. I cut all the fabrics into 3 1/2″ squares and then gave Penny a layout that I had created in EQ7.

I told her to look at the layout and count how many greys she needed to go across the top and put them on the design wall. I suggested that she try to scatter the prints and shades evenly so that they were spread throughout the quilt. She looked at the diagram and was able to lay the whole top out by herself without a problem. I think she did a good job mixing up the prints and colors. I then sewed the top together for her in the order that she had chosen. And I quilted it to her specifications–a stipple with a hidden quilted heart.

I made the quilt now because the next couple of months are going to be busy and I wanted to make sure we got this done before the end of the school year. Silly me, I wasn’t thinking. There was no way that Penny could wait that long to give the quilt to her teacher. She brought it into school yesterday and was very happy to present it to her teacher.

Feel free to use our layout if you’d like to make a quilt. It finishes at 39″ x 42″. It’s a nice baby size and the bonus…you don’t need to piece the back! Woo hoo! I love that about baby quilts.
