Shortlisted for the Australian Interior Design Awards, this townhouse in Albert Park, Melbourne is the latest project from Lauren Mercer of Sisalla Interior Design. Looking to make a fresh new start, the owner of the newly built inner city townhouse set in a narrow laneway came with its own set of challenges when it came to making this a warm and inviting home.

With no architectural features or details to help shape the homes character, or external views to look out on to, Mercer selected a mix of classic mid-century furnishings in combination with contemporary Scandinavian design pieces to create a polished and sophisticated sanctuary for her client.

Resisting the urge to try and make the internal space appear bigger than it actually is, Mercer chose to embrace the feeling of intimacy by creating a mood of enveloping warmth that draws on the stylistic inspiration of a large autumnal coloured artwork recently purchased by the client. The addition of sheer curtains and layered lighting sources effectively add interest and charm to what could have been a cold and sterile space otherwise. “As designers we can get obsessed with allowing natural light into spaces, however in this case it was about filtering the light to create a moody effect” explains Mercer.
