Portsea Hideaway | Mim Design

This four bedroom, three bathroom family home in the tiny coastal town of Portsea, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, has been designed by Melbourne based firm Mim Design to reflect a simplified sense of calm and total relaxation.

Director of Mim Design, Miriam Fanning and the Mim Design team have reconfigured the internal floor plan of what was once a vast, sprawling home in order to create a pavilion style coastal hideout that encourages a sense of close knit family living. In dividing the L shaped building into two separate wings, one for adults and one for children, Fanning and team have successfully designed a home that allows for every room in the house to have its own aspect.

In keeping with a client brief that called for a casual, refined and modern beach house aesthetic, the fixtures, fittings and joinery were all chosen to reflect the tactile elements of the surrounding coastal environment. The open plan kitchen and living area boasts a walk-in pantry and a large island bench in a ‘Portsea Grey’ natural stone together with an open fire place and a timber panelled study alcove.

“To balance the building’s existing black cladding and window frames, we selected textural finishes such as super soft knotted wool carpets, slatted timber wall panels, timber veneer shelving, powder coated door handles and natural stone benches, all in a soft palette of grey, pebble, white ivory, pumice and black,” explains Mim Design’s Kristiina Morgan.

“We wanted to create a relaxing home, where a family could spend quality time together in a picturesque coastal environment that feels both sleek and soothing, and we believe we’ve managed to strike that balance.”
