My Mom Memory:
I can’t really think of one distinct, favorite memory that I have with my mom, but I can definitely remember a few trips that we took together. I’ve always loved to travel and have been lucky enough to go to Australia, Europe, and even simply travel within the United States. One of my favorite trips was one much closer to home. About a month ago, my mom and I went to Washington D.C. for my accepted students day. Accepted student’s day was Monday, but I was also taking Tuesday off from school so we could go back “leisurely on the train” as my mom put it. It was the week before Spring break and I’d only have to be in school for three more days. Naturally, I was pretty excited.
My mom and I rode down on the train together (which is something I’ve always wanted to do). Once we got to DC, we checked in at our hotel and got dressed to go out for dinner. We ended up trying a sort of fast-food Middle Eastern place about a block from our hotel, which was actually really tasty. I just love falafel! We walked around and got ready for admitted students’ day. I was a little nervous going into admitted students’ day because I didn’t know anyone (though I bet hardly anyone else did either) but my mom reassured me that I would be ok and that it would be great to get to see the school again. When that didn’t convince me, she promised to take me for burgers at my favorite burger place, BTS. We went to the admissions presentation and then ducked out to go for lunch. I ended up deciding that I wanted to go to school there and was also a little apprehensive about that decision. I was pretty indecisive when it comes to college stuff. My mom reminded me that there was no “wrong” decision, something that I found really comforting. She told me that there are just different options, not wrong option and that I would end up where I was supposed to be. As cliché as it may sound, her advice was pretty solid. I feel like we often put so much pressure on ourselves to make the “right” decision, as if there is only one correct path in life. In reality, people take all sorts of routes, but they end up where they’re supposed to end up in the end. I’ll always remember that trip to DC with my mom; not only did it help ease my fears about the following year, but it brought me closer to my mom.
