Free Crochet Pattern...Mrs. Bunny Cottontail!

Mrs. Bunny Cottontail is a little spring bunny that is fun and totally squishable. She has a fun spring flower and an adorable little bunny tail too! Mrs. Bunny Cottontail is perfect to tuck into a basket for someone special.

Materials Needed:

Worsted weight yarn in four colors ( I used Red Heart Super Saver in "Spring Green" "Shocking Pink" "Lavender" and "White" for the bunny in the photos)
Small scrap of black yarn for embroidered eyes (or you can make button eyes)
H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
2 buttons (one for the flower center and one for the striped area in the front)
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Fiber fill or yarn scraps for stuffing the bunny

Sizing:

4.5 inches tall (from tops of ears to bottom)
3 inches tall - body height only (without ears)
2.5 inches wide
ears are 1.5 inches tall
6.5 inch body circumference

Note: Sizing is approximate depending on what yarn is used and how much bunny is filled with stuffing.

Instructions:
Ears (make 2):
Ch 4 and join in the furthest ch from the hook to make a ring. In the center of the ring work 2 sc, dc, tr, dc, 2 sc, sl st. Fasten off and leave tails intact for sewing to bunny later.
Flower (make 1):
Ch 4, join in the ch furthest from the hook to make a ring. Work a (dc, sl st) five times in the center of the ring to make 5 petals. Join with a sl st to close round and fasten off, leaving tails intact for sewing onto bunny later. If you like, you can glue or sew a button to the center of the flower.
Body base: (Bunny is worked from the bottom up)
With green yarn, ch 4 and join in the chain furthest from hook to form a ring. Ch 3, and work 11 dc into the center of the ring. Join with a sl st to close round. Do not fasten off and continue to the next section.
Body sides (note: for this section, the bunny alternates between pink and green striping with a white top for the head):
Round 1 (green): ch 1 and work a sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to close round. Round 2 (pink): repeat round 1 Round 3 (green): repeat round 1 Round 4 (pink): repeat round 1 Round 5 (green): repeat round 1 Round 6 (white): repeat round 1 Round 7 (white): repeat round 1 Round 8 (white): repeat round 1 Round 9 (white): repeat round 1 Do not fasten off and continue to next section.
Body decrease (top of head):
With white yarn still, ch 1, then sc2tog in each st around. Repeat for the next round. Fasten off, leave an 6-8 inch tail, then proceed below to "Finishing & Assembly" section.

Finishing & Assembly:
Before closing up the top, sew ears to top of head using tails. It is ok to leave ends on the inside of bunny, they will be hidden when bunny is seamed closed. With black yarn and a tapestry needle, work a french knot for each eye. If you need help, a helpful step by step video can be found below. Alternatively, you could sew or glue buttons for the eyes. Now you're ready to stuff...using fiber fill, yarn scraps, etc, carefully stuff bunny in the top opening. Take care not to over stuff. Thread a tapestry needle with the tail from body and carefully sew opening closed. I sewed around edges, then pulled tight to close up the hole. Tie a secure knot to fasten and weave in end. Make a small white pom pom with white yarn leftovers (video tutorial below) and glue to the back of bunny as shown in the photo above. Glue or sew button to the front of bunny as shown if desired. Shape bunny and ears as needed.
