How to Crochet the Foundation Double Crochet Stitch (fdc) (photo + video tutorial) (Fiber Flux...Adventures in Stitching)

The Foundation Double Crochet Stitch (or fdc for short) is a very handy skill to have in your crochet tool box. It eliminates the need for a starting chain...you work both chains and double crochet stitches as you go!

Step 1: Start with a slip knot on your hook.
Step 2: Chain 3
Step 3: Wrap yarn around hook, then insert hook into the furthest chain from the hook (first chain you made).

Step 4: Wrap yarn around hook and bring up a loop (3 loops on the hook)
Step 5: Wrap yarn around hook and bring through first loop on the hook (3 loops on the hook)
Step 6: Wrap yarn around hook and bring through first two loops on the hook (2 loops on the hook)

Step 7: Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through last two loops on the hook (1 loop left on the hook)

*This completes the first fdc. Step 8 begins the second fdc on your row.

Step 8: Wrap yarn around hook
Step 9: At the bottom last stitch worked, turn work slightly to the side and locate the "v" at the bottom. Insert hook into the "v"

Step 10: Wrap yarn around hook and bring up a loop ( 3 loops on the hook)
Step 11: Wrap Yarn around hook and bring it through the first loop on the hook (3 loops on the hook)
Step 12: Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through next two loops on the hook (2 loops on the hook)

Step 13 (last step): Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through last two loops on the hook (one loop will be left on the hook. This completes the second double crochet stitch. Repeat steps 8-13 for each fdc you need on your row.
