Anna Vaivare: Swimming Pool

I found this small format book some time ago in our letterbox and it's a real pleasure for me to show this little treasure today on the blog. The artist/illustrator Anna Vaivare is living and working in Riga, Latvia. Apart from drawing she loves "to spend time in the forest watching trees from below and walking long distances". "Swimming Pool" (format DIN A6, 28 pages, English text) has been published in June in the mini kuš! series. kuš!, pronounced "koosh!", is Latvia's Premier Indie Comics Publisher, founded in Riga in 2007. The self-imposed aim of kuš! is to popularise comics in Latvia and abroad. Every issue of the kuš! anthology contains comics by international and Latvian artists. Find out more about their great work on their blog, website and facebook. They also organise exhibitions, workshops and jams.

I was a fan of Anna Vaivare from the first moment I saw her energetic bold coloured work. She really knows to observe and I love the uncommon angles in her empathetic illustrations. "Swimming Pool" follows the inner monologue of a cleaner working at the pool. She contemplates about her work and what she sees and on the last pages she reveals her secret to the reader ("I never told anybody").

Also take a look at Anna Vaivare's first children's book where she dives into the forest.

kuš! kuš! (speak koosh!) is the only comics anthology in Latvia founded 2007 in Riga. Every issue contains comics from international and Latvian artists to a certain theme which changes every issue. The aims of kuš! are to popularize comics in a country where this medium is practically non-existant and spreading Latvian comics abroad. kuš! doesn't only publish comics on paper, but also organizes exhibitions, workshops, comics jams and other comics related events besides travelling to international festivals to spread the Latvian comics fever. - See more at: http://www.komikss.lv/about/#sthash.L5hg4Wzs.dpuf
