Things I Did This Weekend: Gratitude

My friend Kaytie helps organize the yearly 24-hour bike event here in Minneapolis called Powderhorn 24, and she asked me to take some photos for them again. Last year I took photos of people in corpse paint but this year, we asked people to hold up signs telling us what they were grateful for.

I took photos from 4am to 6am and it was so damn challenging with the outdoor lighting situation…I thought I could get away with less lighting equipment because there were street lights and there was so much activity just a few feet down the hill from where we were shooting. When you’re accustomed to taking photos of food, you forget all the rules and nuisances of camera lighting – oh, and I completely forgot about bike lights! It was a bit frustrating for me, especially when my external flash died about 45 minutes into the event (resulting in some photos that were of, uh, not ideal quality).

Ugh. I mean, it was a good learning experience for all of us.
