How I Saved 32% On My Grocery Bill with an iPhone App #MyMixx

I hate clipping paper coupons. Even when the register prints them out during checkout and it’s for an item I want to purchase next time, I rarely, if ever, remember the darn things the next time I go to pick up groceries. Some frugality bloggers swear by coupons, and if you look at Instagram, you can see a slew of extreme couponers who are fervent believers in carrying around a notebook full of coupons to save on their favorite items. For most of us reading this blog, we love saving money, but paper coupons are not a thing we spend hours clipping, or want to carry around.

What I love about my iPhone is that I can save money, anywhere I am and I don’t have to “premeditate” my savings. Literally, if I have an extra few minutes before heading home and I need to pick up a few things, while I’m sitting in the parking lot, or while I’m rolling through the store, I can quickly scroll through coupons, click to clip them and they will be added to my account as I checkout. No hours clipping coupons, no having to paw through them during the checkout process and lugging them around the store or the annoyance of forgetting them at home. Yes, I am all about coupon apps!

I recently was invited to download the Jewel Osco App, and was excited to add it to my iPhone app arsenal to help me save money each week. They recently launched MyMixx, their digital couponing feature which you can easily access from your smartphone or check out online. You can scroll through their coupons by category, and it will be added to your MyMixx account. Upon checkout, you enter your phone number associated with your MyMixx account- so even if you forgot your phone (or the battery has died), you will still have access to your savings.

In my first run using my new MyMixx coupons on the Jewel Osco app, I was super stoked to save on two items I needed but didn’t want to pay full price on:

I snagged this Tide Multi-Purpose Oxi to help get my sheets whiter (since baking soda wasn’t quite getting me the results I wanted) for $5. Using an in-store sale and the coupon I clipped on my iPhone to my MyMixx account, I got this $9 product for $5. Yup, momma like.

Of course, I also wanted to pick up something special for the pup since going outside to potty in the snow takes quite a lot of bravery for this little pug. I snagged these Waggin Train Smoky Jerky Snacks (which she went nuts for) for $5. I got $5 off with my MyMixx coupon. Boom.

Here’s the receipt from my first Jewel run. I saved 32% off my bill and got $24.45 off. The coupons are available for a variety of items from toiletries, frozen meals, paper goods, canned soups (which I use up frequently and hate paying full price for), and household items that are helpful to have but can add up really quickly.

I think though, beyond the $24.45 saved, the biggest win from this grocery run was the fact it literally took me 10 minutes to clip the coupons and I did it minutes before walking into the store. I don’t have to set aside time to clip, or remember the coupons- so if I have a last minute run to Jewel while out on other errands, my savings go with me. Honestly, saving shouldn’t be a hassle, and I’m excited to find another iPhone app that will allow me to save a bit more without any fuss!

I will be posting about my experiences using the MyMixx program on my Jewel-Osco app over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for more updates as I use my phone to save money at the grocery store! Follow Jewel-Osco on Twitter for updates!
