Super Easy DIY 2X4 Garage Shelving

Super Easy DIY 2X4 Garage Shelving- perfect for beginners!

Slowly but surely, my kid’s outdoor toys have taken over the garage. I’ve made it my summer mission to get this space in check. First up, I needed shelving! A quick search of garage shelving proved that it’s expensive and I couldn’t get the exact size I wanted. I decided to build the entire shelving out of 2x4s.

2x4s were ideal to use because they’re inexpensive and easy to work with. I cut all the wood using a miter saw- no table saw necessary! I made a 7X8 foot shelf for around $80, which is considerably less than I would have paid at a store!

These shelves are freestanding. I screwed them into the studs to secure them. The design is very basic. There are supports at either side and 4 2x4s make each shelf.

Shelf measures 7 X 8 feet

Materials:

2x4s (8 feet long)- 22 total

3 inch screws

Miter saw

Drill

Level

The first step is to assemble the aides of the ladder.

For each side:

Cut 2 2x4s 7 feet long. Cut 4 pieces of wood that measure 17 inches long.

Screw the 17 inch long boards to the sides at the distances pictured above. Corner clamps will hold the boards together so they don’t shift while screwing.

Add 4 2x4s to the bottom shelf bracket. Space them evenly and screw in place.

Add 4 2x4s to the remaining shelves. Screw in place. You can leave the shelves bare for paint (like I did).
