DIY Dog Treats - with added nutrition!

There is always a pretty huge stash of treats in our home. Daniel and I work with the dogs so much that it’s required as a reward. There are a few DIY snacks that I turn to on a regular basis, but this one is my latest creation! Nutrition is important, so I tweaked a recipe I found online just a bit. :) I substituted part of the flour with Purina® Pro Plan® for the potential of added nourishment and to ease the food swap!

When making the switch between brands, it's important to introduce the new food slowly. I replace a portion of their current food with Purina® Pro Plan® for a few days, and then increase the amount until it's totally swapped out. I learned this lesson the hard way, and so did our poor pups when they had tummy problems. Including small portions of their new food into treats will help the process, too! :)

Ingredients: 1/3 cup of flour, 3/4 cup oats, 3/4 cup Purina® Pro Plan® , 4 tablespoons peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of water, 1 beaten egg, 1 banana

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
2. Mash the banana in a large bowl.
3. Blend the oats and Purina® Pro Plan® (in blender) and pour over the banana.
4. Add the flour, PB, water, and egg, and mix.
5. Form spheres about 1 inch to 1.5 inches in diameter. Flatten if you want a more cookie type shape.
6. Place on a sheet of foil on a cookie sheet and bake for about 30 minutes.

I go through treats pretty quickly when I'm teaching Osa new tricks. She works so hard and loves food so much, it's the perfect reward. Sampson also receives treats for staying out of the way. haha! Just kidding, but I really do have him sit, stay, lay while I work with Osa. The perks of adding Purina® Pro Plan® into their homemade treats: makes food switching easier on the belly, potential health benefits, and I even saved money on dog treats!

The cookie shaped treats are easy to cut into fourths. Smaller treats are best for training purposes. I used those to get Osa to balance both sizes on her face. :)

Buster was the perfect shopping partner. She loved all of the new PetSmart smells! It's nice to be able to take your fur babies on mini-adventures. Usually larger dogs aren't allowed in stores!

What are your favorite dog treat recipes? The pupsicles I shared a while back remain in the top 3! I'll have to work on editing that recipe with Purina® Pro Plan®!

xoxo
