How to host a murder mystery party
For this past Valentine’s Day, I decided I wanted to host a fun party for all of our friends! I began scouring the internet for ideas, and while I loved all the pink and red themed parties, I wanted to do something a little different..hence, the idea to host a murder mystery party. Kind of ironic when Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about love right? haha! Once I settled on the murder mystery theme, I knew I had to go with “the roarings 20’s” because…I mean, who doesn’t love dressing up like a flapper girl?! In case you too ever want to throw a murder mystery party, which you definitely should, here are five party planning steps!
1. Purchase A Murder Mystery Package
The first thing I did to start off the party planning was to find which murder mystery kit I wanted to go with, I looked at several different ones online and in stores but soon decided on Shot In The Dark Mysteries. The first thing that drew me to this site was that you could choose the specific amount of people that were going to be at your party, for example, we had 6 girls and 5 boys attending our get-together, and I could choose a murder mystery package specific to our party size! I loved this because it made it so much easier than having to make sure to invite a set number of people or to have an equal number of guys and girls. Another great thing about this package is that it is all downloadable to your computer! It comes with invitations, a host guide, character descriptions, and even an some audio to help move things along. I was really worried at first that I would be confused as to what I needed to do and send to people before they arrived, but it tells you step by step what you need to know as a host, without revealing who the murderer is!
2. Choosing The Right Guests
This may seem silly, but it is very important to choose the right people to invite to your murder mystery party. This will be a night when you will want everyone to go all out, get into character, and not worry about being a little silly. I wanted to invite people who I knew would really enjoy it and also who all knew each other so that they would feel more comfortable. When you receive your package, there will be a list of characters and their descriptions, I read through all of them and then chose the character I thought best fit each of my guests! I think this made the night much more fun because everyone really embraced the persona of who they were supposed to be that night
3. Find The Perfect Outfit
I was so excited to go on the hunt for a 20’s inspired dress! Part of the fun in a murder mystery party is going all out with a costume to match your theme! I was lucky enough to be able wear things I already had in my own closet (as well as borrowed from my sister’s closet!) but I wanted to give y’all some fun outfit ideas for your future party! I had so much fun looking up “Gatsby themed” outfits on pinterest (follow me here!) and these were some of my favorite inspiration pictures..

4. The Menu
For our party, I planned the out the menu and then assigned everyone a different food or drink to bring! While I knew the food would be important, I went with simple items to make it easier on everyone. We had “prohibition” sliders (ham on rolls), 1920’s deviled eggs parisienne, “The Charleston” chicken salad croissants, “The bees knees” caprese skewers, and “flapper girl” fruit tarts to name a few things. I also new we would need at least two signature drinks. We made this lemon drop cocktail and it was such a hit! It was very popular in the 1920’s so it was fun feeling like we were really in that era. To go along with our dessert, we had white russians, while I am not a huge fan of coffee flavored drinks, the coffee lovers in our grouped raved about this drink! It was perfect for sipping as we mingled with each other trying to figure out “who dunnit!”
5. The Decor
Keys for decorating for a 20’s themed party…silver, glitter, feathers, anything vintage, pearls, fresh roses, and lots of candles. Here are some images that I think would be super fun to recreate!

We had the most wonderful time and now the group is asking to do another one with a 50’s theme!
