In an unexpected move, Bonello switches actors and Helmut Berger steps in to play the older Saint Laurent in the late ’80s, the final act jumps back and forth between the two actors. I also want to point out two really good performances: Jeremie Renier as Saint Laurent’s longtime partner and lover Pierre Berge who stood by the designer during the low points in his life; and Louis Garrel as Jacques de Bascher, the friend and lover who guided Saint Laurent down the path of destruction, which involved drugs, alcohol and kinky sex. Major props go to costume designer Anais Romand, who had her work cut out for her after Saint Laurent’s estate refused to support the film and lend any of the their collection to the filmmakers (they were supporting another film based on YSL’s life). Romand recreated a majority of Saint Laurent’s fashions including the climactic 1976 Russian Ballet collection. She also received some help from a private collector who loaned out various authentic Saint Laurent pieces for the film.
