MY DIY | Flower Derby Hat

I am SUPER excited about Derby Day this Saturday! Wearing oversized hats piled high with flowers, traipsing around in flowing dresses and drinking mint jelups all afternoon…perfection! We had a hat decorating party yesterday and I am so happy with how they turned out! If you deck out a hat for the derby, snap a pic and tag with #ispymydiy on Instagram, or send a snapchat to ispydiy, I can’t wait to see your creations! Steps and supplies after the break…

Supplies:

Hat Wire Fake flowers Greenery Tulle Needle nose pliers Wire cutters Steps: Make a bow out of the tulle and wrap a piece of wire around the middle. Stick the wire through the band of hat and bend it back through so that you you can wrap the wire around itself to secure. Next, begin with a base of greenery around the hat. Pierce the hat with the end of a leafy stem and curve the wire back to create a hook. Take the stems off the flowers, either by cutting or pulling the heads of the flowers off. With he garden wire, pierce the base of the flower head and sting on a few flowers. Attach this wire to the hat by poking both ends through the hat band. To finish, twist the ends of the wire together on the inside of the hat. Clip any access wire. You may add additional flowers using the wire as a twist tie and attaching it to the hat. The bigger, the better luck your horse has of winning! Play around with different methods to attach the flowers to the hat. If you want a more permanent floral arrangement, glue is a good option. Have any ideas? Leave a comment! I recommend working with a single color and incorporating different shades of that color to add variety to your arrangement. You may also want to start with one larger flower you’re able to fill in bare spots around it with multiple smaller flowers or greenery. Don’t forget to grab some neutral colored flowers, like white. They’re great for filling in empty spots, too!
