Spotlight on: Cane Furniture

When the cane trend reared its head in the Eighties my parents went hell for leather. We’re talking two seaters with tropical palm prints, those flying saucer chairs that you sink into (admittedly SO comfy) and my Dad’s pride and joy…le cane bar, the curved one, with those vinyl topped bar stools, oh boy oh boy, they weren’t just loving the cane trend, they WERE the cane trend.

But the Eighties are truly gone people and cane has been having a comeback for a while and in such a lovely and accessible way – i could even have some pieces in my house without flinching whenever i see them. I’m pretty sure it would be so easy to pick up a cane chair or two from a junk shop or auction – a lick of paint and Bob would be your über stylish uncle!

Take a look at some creative cane ideas.

Of course it’s beautiful in its raw, cleaned up state too. There are a couple of tricks for keeping plain cane looking contemporary instead of a throwback to your aunty Doris’ house: match with modern and Mid-century Modern-style pieces; plain jane cane loves to be surrounded by lots of white (90%) with a little touch of glossy black; a faux fur or sheepskin throw nonchalantly draped over a cane chair is pure Scandi chic; and if you are scouring the junk shops, try to nab yourself two of the same design – for some reason a pair of plain cane chairs feel more high design than just one lonely little seat.

So what do you think? Are you inspired to hit the second hand stores and find yourself a little cane treasure? I know I am.
