B E A U T Y / Bed Head Waves Tutorial

Jumper: Monki. Lipstick: Sunbronze by Max Factor. Nails: Navigate Her by Essie.

I think it’s fair to say that when I find a look I like that I stick to it. Usually my hair is the last part of getting ready and by that time I’m either growing exasperated or more commonly, I’m running late. However when the occasion rises that my hair does get a little bit of grooming I want it to say ‘Who, Me? I just crawled out of bed.’ This is a minimal effort required look to bed head natural waves and a far cry from a prom queen do.

Step 01:
I start with freshly washed, clean hair. I brush my hair using my Tangle Teazer and apply Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray to towel dried hair. I run my fingers through my hair whilst blow drying before giving my hair a quick blast upside down to add volume to my roots.

Step 02:
I section my hair into three parts: lower, middle and top. I start with the lower section and pile the rest of my hair on top of my head. I then spray my hair using John Freida Heat Defeat to minimize hair damage.

Step 03:
I actually can’t remember the specific brand of hair tong I use, I bought this around four years ago for about £20 and it’s still going strong but these equivalents by John Freida and Babyliss look pretty similar. There’s no science to these waves so I pick random sections of hair which are normally an inch in length and curl outwardly, away from the face. I apply the heat to my hair for around 8 seconds whilst making sure I leave an inch of the ends of my hair untouched by the curling tong to create more of a relaxed feel to the curl.

Step 04:
After I’ve curled the whole lower section of hair I use L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray to the hold the curl. I then clip the section back before repeating the process with the middle section.

Step 05:
When it comes to the top section you need to think about where your hair is going to fall around your face. As I have a centre parting I curl both front sections of my hair outward so they begin to curl out when they hit my cheekbones as I find this the most flattering on the face. I continue by curling the rest of the top section of hair.

Step 06:
After removing the clips from my hair I go back in with my curling tong and take pieces at random to curl as to create a more textured and less regimented look.

Step 07:
This is the final step. I go through my hair with my fingers to roughen up my curls, I often tip my hair upside down as to add that ‘mussy’ look to my hair before using hair spray to add volume to my hair. I then use a comb to backcomb my hair at the crown and throughout any parts of my hair that require a little more texture.
