Science Activity: Fizzing Fairy Potions! (The Imagination Tree)

Enjoy a brilliant science activity for kids with these fizzing fairy potions! Fabulously sparkly, colourful and frothy, they are sure to inspire some awe and wonder and are so simple to produce.

The girls have been loving this magical little science activity so much that we have repeated it often, in various formats, over the past three weeks!

Inspired by this awesome video about making Wizard’s Brew, by Babble Dabble Do, we set up our own version to make some Fizzing Fairy Potions!

What you need:

Bicarbonate of Soda

( Baking Soda in the US)

Vinegar

(we use white distilled)

Washing up liquid ( dish soap in the US)

Powder Paint ( food colouring will work too)

Glitter Flakes

(ordinary glitter will do fine too)

A small glass jar

A magic wand Fairy White Glitter Star Wand

(ok, a spoon will work too!)

A tray or large dish which can contain the overflow

It helps to get dressed up as a fairy (or other fantasy creature!) and have your magic wand at the ready, all set for stirring the potions quickly.

First, fill the jar half way with vinegar, then stir in a spoonful of your chosen colour.

Next add a big squeeze of washing up liquid and a liberal helping of sparkly confetti.

Then add in a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and start to stir with the magic wand.

Think of a brilliant fairy wish or spell to make while you’re mixing and watch the magic happen!

The potion will bubble and froth, fizzing out over the jar and making a gorgeous, sparkly mixture!

There’s no need to wash it out to start again, just kwep adding more bicarb, washing up liquid and vinegar and stir it up! You can change colours during the experiment by simply adding them over the top.

And don’t forget to keep on sprinkling that glitter for lots of magic and wishes!

We have done this so many times now, with all of the colours and it looks stunning and brings squeals of delight each and every time!
