Emily’s October Playlist

In New York, we don't really listen to the radio. These days people listen to the radio when they drive, and we are not a driving bunch. We are Starbucks-frequenting, subway-taking walkers, with those white iBuds (is that what they're called? It is now!!!) precariously wedged into our earholes, playing the same four or five songs over and over again for... months? Years? Unless you are a DJ or are living with a DJ, which is exciting because DJs are generally hot, but is actually more exciting because you're constantly discovering new music.

Therefore, I rely on Shazam, primarily during two sets of circumstances: while watching runway shows (e.g., Zebra Katz' "

Ima Read" debuted during Rick Owens' show a few seasons back) and when I'm driving in a white mustang convertible in LA (I always rent a white mustang convertible). Back in August, I discovered Lorde's "

Royals" on the radio, fell in love, and have been on a mission to track that Kiwi down for a Top Shelf ever since. At Rodarte in September, J Dilla's "Workinonit" played during the first half of the show. I now have all three "Dillanthology" albums downloaded on my iPhone.

In the spirit of sharing and caring, and with the weekend all but here (!!), I made an October playlist—my current favorite tracks—this morning on my way to work. Consider me your endearingly nerdy amateur DJ girlfriend.
