Men Sella met and drew: Tom de Kort (29)

Meet Sella Molenaar, successful illustrator and the latest addition to the Jan Marcel team. After working for big brands like H&M, Moët and Hennessy and Supertrash, she will draw one well-dressed man for JanMarcel.com every single month, with whom she also has a short interview.

“I always feel attracted to and inspired by the ones that stand out in the crowd and love to draw these intriguing figures I meet in my daily life. Every month I will share some of my little encounters with inspiring and stylish men.”

I have known Tom for quite a while now and even though he is not focused on trends or very outspoken in his wardrobe choices, he always dressed very well in a laid back and natural way. A way I appreciate in all its non-pretentiousness. We always have a lot to talk about, but we never actually have a conversation on fashion. I asked him about his styling secrets while he was eating an egg sandwich.

Profile

Name: Tom de Kort
Age: 29
Residence: Amsterdam
Profession: Creative entrepreneur

What are you wearing?
“A basic black T-shirt, ragged denim blouse and Levi’s jeans. I have this jeans style in five different colours.”

What does a typical day in your life look like?
“I have a very free lifestyle an do all kinds of fun stuff for a living. With some of my friends I organise a festival called ‘De Zon’ and at the moment I am working on some event marketing projects. Besides that, I organise parties and am the co-initior of ‘Club Godverdomme’. I would love to start the day with a morning swim before I go to the office. My office is a really nice, light and happy space where I come up with the best ideas. I love having people over there to play some music in between my creative process.”

What kind of clothes fit your lifestyle?
“I am a practical guy and select my outfits to the occasion and the weather. When it is cold I wear three layers and a coat as this as a ski jacket. When it is hot I wear cut off jeans and a tank top. It is that easy. Not too long ago I was DJ-ing on a wedding and did not have any suitable clothes. That is when I bought my first ‘serious’ Filippa K shirt. I think it is the most expensive item I own and now I wear it when I am visiting my parents every now and then.”

What would you never wear?
“Something that is visibly branded or ‘in fashion’. I would never wear clothing just because they are ‘cool’ at the moment. In fact, most of my clothes are borrowed and became mine because the owner forgot I was borrowing them. If I buy clothes they need to be basic or completely original. For instance, once I bought a women’s shirt in a vintage store in Berlin. It has these buttons and pastel geometric print and is not manly at all, but I like its weirdness and the fact that not even a girl would want to wear it.”

What about accessories?
“I have a small-sized Nomad backpack that I use almost every single day. I had it ever since I was ten years old, for practical use while hiking through the Alps. Now I get a lot of compliments on it, because it has this ‘vintage’ feeling. These things make me laugh – and cry at the same time. I do not like jewellery on both men and women.”

Most recent purchase?
“A black legging from the women’s section of H&M. It was something I was wearing to a party later that day.”
