DIY Coffee Coconut Salt Body Scrub

Normally I save myself the mess and hassle by just walking two blocks to Fresh and getting their amazing Brown Sugar body scrub, but was inspired by the coffee grounds I had sitting in a bag – to either use them in my patio garden, or in a beauty treatment. This scrub is actually really easy to make and the ingredients are powerful natural beauty aids. Read on!

INGREDIENTS

  • Coffee – coffee is one of the main ingredients in many of my pricey body treatments as it’s a natural cure for temporarily treating cellulite when massaged into the skin. However in raw form but in raw form the grounds actually gently exfoliate the skin and act as an agent to draw moisture out of the skin, in all the right places (butt, thighs, tummy, arms!). *As a bonus coffee naturally stains the skin, so this is a great summer tan extender too!
  • Coconut Oil – already being hailed as the perfect natural beauty product, coconut oil is naturally anti microbial, super hydrating to help restore moisture into dry skin, and leaves a natural glow on the skin. I don’t even need to mention that the coffee plus the coconut oil mixed together smell heavenly! *Be sure to always get unrefined, raw coconut oil.
  • Epsom Salt – Most people use sugar when creating body scrubs, but I chose course salt for two reasons – admittedly didn’t have sugar in the house and secondly even though they both have great exfoliating properties, I think salt feels better on the skin and especially if you use an epsom salt – which is actually a mineral containing magnesium and sulfate which are natural detoxifiers when absorbed through the skin.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Fill an empty jar with 1 cup coffee grounds and 1/4 cup coconut oil.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of chunky epsom salts.
  3. I thought I may add a little organic vanilla extract for smell, but the coffee plus coconut oil together smelled SO heavenly I didn’t need the extra sweet smell. Up to you. You can also add an essential oil like lavender or orange blossom!
  4. A little goes a long way, so grab a palmful and scrub all over body, including face, in an upward motion towards the heart. This helps get blood circulating and stimulates the lymph.
  5. Bonus for at home spa body detox – rub scrub all over body, take saran wrap or cheese cloth and wrap body as you would get done for a body wrap, sit with it on for 30 minutes in a steam shower. Multitask a hair mask! Remove wrap and rinse.
  6. Clean up caution! This causes a bit of a mess in the shower and can create a very slippery floor. Be careful to not clog your drain. Also a little goes a long way. Best used in shower to control mess.
  7. Store in airtight container. Mine has lasted for almost 2 weeks. If you want a longer shelf life, put in refrigerator and let set for 30 minutes at room temperature before using as coconut oil will solidify.
