Set Sail On Hurtigruten Ship: From Bergen To Trondheim

Tonight, we board on the Hurtigruten Ship MS Nordnorge and we will be sailing for 2 nights from Bergen to Trondheim.

Name of this ship, MS Nordnorge is taken from the most northerly area of Norway. Nord-Norge means the northern part of Norway, mostly situated inside the Arctic Circle. MS Nordnorge was built in Norway in 1997 and is the second ship in Hurtigruten to have this name. On board MS Nordnorge guests can admire the work of artists such as Johanne Marie Hansen-Krone, Ellen Lenvik and Dagfinn Bakke. The interior decoration very much reflects an Art Nouveau and Art Deco influence.

At 6pm, checking into the cabins begin followed by a safety briefing at 9:15pm. The ship departs at 10:30pm. We explored the entire ship and snapped a few pictures before turning in for the night. Despite it was built in 1997 (almost 7 years old) it’s very well maintained.

The Observation Lounge features glass windows made in such a way one can sit to enjoy the dancing lights. For our voyage, chances of catching the lights are pretty slim according to the Captain.

Day 6, after spending a night on board (the ship makes short stops at Florø, Måløy and Torvik), we approached the waters of Stadthavet — the first stretch of open sea. I felt horrible during breakfast, sea sick I guess and I had to go back to bed until the ship docked at Ålesund, one of Norway’s most picturesque cities.

My sister was so sweet, she bought me a pair of sea sick bands. Thanks jie.

We had 3 hours to explore this city known for its Art Nouveau architecture with its lavishly decorated pastel buildings. And for a great bird’s eye view, head up to Aksla, a hill overlooking the city.

Lunch time.

Weather at Ålesund is nice and sunny. And I am so happy we get to “get out of the ship” due to my sea sick. The hotdog definitely helped.

Because we were there on a Sunday, many shops were closed including eateries. The city was quite but that doesn’t matter, we enjoyed the weather, hot food and scrolling around taking more pictures.

After a short break, the cruise continues towards Trondheim with a short stop at Molde around dinner time. We will be spending another night on board the ship.

Tonight, we have decided to have our dinner at Restaurant Hålogaland on board MS Nordnorge.

For dinners on board, we had to pre-book a table and there are two time slots. Menu is all pre-set with no other options so for those we special dietary requirements (for example, no pork, no beef or vegetarian), please make known during booking.

Menu that night includes Potato & Leek Soup with artichoke foam — this may not look like much but it’s very delicious. Roasted Turkey Breast served with baked root vegetables, pickled turnips, potato and herb butter, not bad. And Baked Apple with raisins, nuts, cinnamon and pear sorbet — now, the dessert is so good.

Thank you for looking.
