Are You at Risk of Diabetes? Take the Test and Enter to WIN #DiabetesAwarenessMonth #Contest

In 2014, Chapman’s Ice Cream issued a calendar with pictures of adorable kids enjoying their different products. January featured their Frozen Yogurt which is rated #1 in Canada (and can always be found in our fridge). March was their Low Calorie Smoothie Bars (as you know we’re also fans). And, in honour of Diabetes Awareness Month, they posted a picture of Molly (the star of Mommy Outside The Box) enthusiastically enjoying their “No Sugar Added” ice cream. The Kids have been looking forward to November so that they can see Molly’s face every day and I have been looking forward to it as well because…

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

On a daily basis I deal with blood sugar issues. Usually low. While Max hasn’t yet been tested, I believe that he too has hypoglycemia. In turn, we all eat small meals throughout the day and stay away from simple sugars. People tease me because The Kids can only have one candy a day but it has little to do with cavities and jumping off the walls and more to do with their overall health. Having said that, everything in moderation is one of my mottos.

It is estimated that out of 35 million Canadians, approximately 5.7 million have prediabetes

That’s 1 in 6 too many. Just ask my two male cousins who are insulin dependent. I won’t go into all the reasons why it’s no fun to have diabetes, but I will tell you that there are some things that you can do to help keep yourself healthy.

Minimize Your Risk of Developing Diabetes

  • Control your weight,
  • Stay active,
  • Eat a balanced diet,
  • Quit smoking,
  • Reduce your alcohol consumption.

If you’re unsure about your health, take the CanRisk test and get educated about your risk factors. I took the test and fortunately, my risk of developing diabetes is low. However, since I have blood sugar issues and don’t know my family history (I’m adopted), I have to be careful. Note that for every test taken, Novo Nordisk will donate $1 to diabetes research.

The bonus is that if you complete the test, you will be entered to WIN a $5,000 or one of two $2,500 Money for Life Experiences. And that’s something to get excited about.

Do You Know Someone With Diabetes?

Note that I asked Chapman’s if they would be issuing a similar calendar this year but unfortunately they’re not. Maybe if we tell them how much we miss it they will. Just saying.
