DIY Wine Stakes Glass Holder

The past few springs, we have traveled to Napa and Sonoma Valleys to relax and enjoy all that wine country has to offer. We love perusing the boutiques filled with beautiful wine barrels turned into cutting boards and wine accessories. Nearly every store offers wine stakes, however, I have yet to see them in the Midwest! I love the convenience they offer while picnicking, eliminating the risk of spilling a great glass of Cambria. Options available online feel a little kitschy, so I made them with copper, which easily integrates into our decor and aesthetic. Copper is easily accessible, moldable and only looks more beautiful with time {and a glass of wine}.

To create your own wine stake glass holder you’ll need:

6 gage copper wire {from the electrical section of the hardware store}

wire cutters

sand paper or sanding sponge

DIY wine glass holder instructions:

Working the copper with your hands, curve the end to hold a glass and cut to size. For picnic height you’ll want them to be just 12-16″.

Using your wire cutters, cut the copper at an angle, so it will easily stake into the ground.

Sand the rough edges to smooth the sharp edges.

Place your stake on a solid surface and push down with your hands to straighten it.

Like anything handmade, each stake will vary slightly, but that’s what makes them beautiful.

You can make them more of a U-shaped hook or a spiral like I did. I like the spiral concept because it feels durable, you can easily get the wine glass in or out without risking it falling from a simple tap.

Copper can be purchased by the foot or in larger coils. Each stake costs less than $2 and can be made in under 5 minutes. They’re very portable and perfect for picnics, concerts, lakeside enjoyment and more!

To polish them to their pristine glory, wet a paper towel and add a dash of Bar Keeper’s friend and swipe it up and down the wine stake. Rinse and enjoy!
