Has anyone seen The High Life starring Alan Cumming? If not, there is a brilliant episode about a Scottish rock star chartering a plane for his 9-year-old daughter’s birthday and 30 of her ‘wee’ friends. The daughter’s name is Aurora Borealis, apparently it was what he was looking at when she was conceived. It’s absolutely hilarious, totally an underrated comedic work of Alan Cumming – hunt it down if you can.

Any way there is a point to what I am saying and I am getting to it. Aurora Borelias, better known as the Northern Lights is a natural phenomenon visible in the night sky and it’s something I’ve wanted to witness for as long as I can remember. You can see it from certain places in Finland, Norway, Sweden, even northern Canada but the most popular destination to see the Northern Lights is Reykjavik in Iceland. And it’s high on my travel bucket list.

I am yearning to visit Iceland to witness this spectacular sight on earth and I’m determined to make this journey either later in the year or in 2016. Apparently the best time to see the Northern Lights is between October and March. It would also be a bonus to visit the natural hot springs and take a dip in the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.

It’s hard to narrow my three favourite destinations but if I must, then my second choice would be to go trekking Latin America, taking in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela…which is pretty much South America in its entirety. I can’t pick one country, I’d have to visit them all especially if money was no object and I could take at least six months off. I can only imagine how beautiful these countries would be to capture on camera – the colours and the incredible culture shock that would hit me between the eyes.

The third part of the world I would love to see would be south east Asia – China, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Borneo, Malaysia..so much natural beauty in those countries not to mention how much of it is steeped in history. As I get carried away and contemplate selling off my worldly possessions to fund one trip, maybe you are feeling inspired to describe where you would like to escape to.
