Maintenance Monday: Brow Wax

I love this montage from Princeton Calling of these famous beautiful brows! If I could choose I think Id like mine to look like a combination between Elizabeth Taylors and Hedy Lamarrs.Photo from Princeton CallingAmy Romero (Previously, Amy Talanca) has been waxing my brows for as long as I can remember. She is a joy to spend time with and a complete perfectionist when it comes to making brows the perfect shape! Amy RomeroPhoto CreditAt my last appointment, I showered the goddess of eyebrows with some questions. Take a look at our summed up conversation below.Amys philosophy... "The eyebrows are quite honestly one of the most important features of your face. They frame your eyes and can elongate or widen a face based on how theyre shaped. A clean brow that is proportionately shaped for your individual features can completely transform your face." Before an important event, Amy recommends that you come see her... "at least three weeks before the event for the regular waxing and shaping. Then about 3-4 days prior to the big day, stop by the spa and well touch up, tweak, and perfect until you are completely satisfied. This should help prevent any redness or irritation from popping up in any pictures, but still be close enough to your event for you to look fresh and polished. Also, I cannot stress this enough, seeing your aesthetician regularly will eliminate having to make any drastic changes right before an important event." For normal maintenance..."I tell most clients to be sure not to go more than 3-4 weeks without popping by to see me. However, there are some situations where I might advise coming in every two weeks if were in the middle of a major brow reconstruction. Your aesthetician can work with you on a regular basis to make sure you are happy with your look and, if necessary, suggest minor changes that can be taken in baby steps."Amys favorite tips for beautiful brows...*Less is more.If you wax just a little, and the shape isnt perfect yet, you can always wax/shape some more. But, if you wax too much and you hate it, tough cookies! Less is usually more when it comes to altering such a prominent feature, so go slowly!*Pictures are your best friend. If you have a specific look in your head, bring some pictures with you to your appointment. If you want to look like your sister/ fave celeb/ neighbors best friends gerbils personal trainer, Im going to need something to go off of here. Im not a mind reader, and seeing a picture of what your goal is can help me assess how realistic it is for your specific face and features. If we find ourselves on the journey to bringing your brows back from the deep, dark, depths of over plucking, I highly recommend snapping a "before" pic of where we started. Again, just like growing out your bangs, it is easy to get discouraged and go back to hacking at your face yourself (put the tweezers down!), but seeing your own progress can make a world of difference. Im always happy to snap a pic before you leave my room, so just ask!*If you dont look good, I dont look good, so trust me when I say Im just as invested here as you are! As soon as you step out of the spa doors, you are a walking model for me. You represent my hard work, years of expertise, and non-stop obsession with perfection. I have every reason in the world to steer you in the right direction - so trust me when I tell you something, darn it! A happy customer with kick-butt brows is going to show off her beautiful face to friends and (hopefully) recommend me to those closest to her. You win, I win. Its that simple. Were a team here!*Never underestimate the importance of your brows foundation - your skin. A perfect set of brows on unhappy skin is just a travesty. Talk to your aestheticism about your skin concerns and ask for recommendations. Any major change usually calls for a facial appointment (pregnancy, new medication, moving to a new climate, etc.) and a good aesthetician will be more than happy to help you navigate the road back to happy, glowing skin. *Pretend Im like the FBI - you never, ever, ever want to lie to me. Pretending you arent taking a medication, withholding info about a new prescription or skin product...those are some really quick ways to have your whole face just fall right off, my friend. (Okay, thats a bit dramatic, but I have your attention now, yes?) There are a number of medications out there that are bad news bears when it comes to waxing. Your skin could be too thin, delicate, and prone to lifting (aka come off with the hair!), and we want to avoid that whole mess. Tell me what youre using, and I promise we can figure out a way to work around it.To make an appointment with Amy Call Halcyon Days Salon & Spa at Neiman Marcus North Park at 214-346-0731.Here are some photos from my last appt...
