Updating a Blank Space.

Since getting in to interiors, I’ve been all about the ‘trial and error’ approach when decorating my home. You’ll often noticed that prints, plants and ornaments move from room to room until they find a forever home. It works for me, and I get to shake things up without spending a penny.

However, I’ve had a blank wall in my living room (behind my sofa, such an awkward place!) for a few months now and nothing, NOTHING, worked. I moved furniture, hung frames, arranged plants… I couldn’t make it happen. I considered an old retro or Scandi sideboard for here but because we have a TV cabinet on the wall parallel, I thought it would be too much. It was on Pinterest I saw a couple of homes with bookshelves behind sofas – it was my only hope. I picked up three of the £20 IKEA Billy shelves, telling myself that they’re cheap so it didn’t matter if it didn’t work. We (Jordan and my little brother) put them together, moved them together and then I got to work styling them.

I have a lot of books to display so I knew I would use a lot of the space for this, and I managed to fill out the rest with plants and ornaments. The end result is lovely, I really like it – I didn’t expect it to work so well, but it’s come together really nicely.
A lot of you asked me how I got my books the same size, I actually just went through them and organised each shelf by same-sized books (it took seconds). Unfortunately, this only worked for 2 or 3 shelves so you can see the bottom shelf is full of all the random ones and Jordan’s Star Wars collection. Divine.

I love having a big surface to display lamps, art and vases like this – I always say my style is very ‘organised clutter’ so open shelving like this really works for me. I’m sure I’ll change up the arrangement on a monthly basis, but that keeps things fresh and helps me feel like I have a show house…
There’s quite a lot to mention here in terms of linkies and things, but I’ll give it a go!

White lamp, IKEA // Bookcases, IKEA // Bell jars, H&M // Home lamp, BHS // Copper tray, H&M // Copper side table, MADE.COM // Gold swan, H&M // Mountains print, Lloyd Loves // Snake plant, Ebay // Globe, Laura Ashley (similar) // Cushions, H&M IKEA // Pineapple plants, etsy // Diamond rug, eBay //

I’ve also scrapped my bar cart trolley in favour of a more streamlined selection – I’m going to hang cocktail glasses from the top shelf under the copper tray and then maybe add a few more details so it feels like a little bar area. It’s sad to see the bar cart go (currently sitting in my hallway) but it doesn’t seem to work anywhere.

So that’s it – I finally filled the white wall! What do you think of the new look?
