Obsession: Stone + Cloth Backpacks

It’s no surprise that we're huge advocates for socially conscious lines—why not look good while doing good? So when we stumbled upon Stone Cloth’s stylish and functional backpacks on Instagram, we were smitten. Not only does the brand post some envy-inducing snaps of its signature bag The Benson (#TravelingBenson), but the entire line—which consists of backpacks ($74–$95), totes ($69) and select accessories ($9–$35)—is exclusively manufactured in the US, right down to the zipper.

The story behind Stone Cloth is also one for the books. Matthew Clough, the creative mind behind the label, dreamed up the idea after hiking to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Traveling with him was a porter named Benson, who Clough came to find out had two school-aged children and made less than $2 a day. Perplexed by the idea that Benson could not provide enough money to put his children through school, he decided to do something about it.
The Benson ($95) is now the brand’s flagship backpack, available in nine different colorways and patterns (our favorites are the durable canvas Nautical Navy and the sleek denim version), acting as an homage to his Kilimanjaro experience and a symbol of education. Did we mention these bags are totally unisex? And tech lovers, rejoice: the bag also comes with a genius padded laptop sleeve. To quote Chandler Bing, could this bag be any better?

Well, actually it can. In partnership with the Knock Foundation, a non-profit in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro that is dedicated to providing education in the developing world, Stone Cloth donates 10 percent of its sales to help provide scholarships for students in need. To date, the company has helped more than 30 children continue their education through scholarships, which provide tuition, school meals and supplies. It’s a hand up, not a handout. Clough believes education is paramount in creating a brighter future in the long run.
