Hadrian’s Wall Walk, Part 2: Kit List

I’m a sucker for a kit list, map, or itinerary, and I thought you might be too. This was the first multi-day hike that we’ve ever done, and we didn’t really know what to take with us. We looked up a few kit lists on the internet, and made a few calls of our own. Here’s the complete list of kit we took on Hadrian’s wall between the two of us and a dog. I’ve included brand names and links where possible, and items marked with an asterisk are the items we took but didn’t use.

Coats, bags, shoes & boots

• 2 x Vango Sherpa 65l packs (with inbuilt rain covers, essential!)
• 2 x Northface jackets
• 2 x cheap ponchos
• 1 x Crumpler camera bag* (For the first day this was down by my side, but got annoying so went into my pack with my camera – I relied on my iPhone for photography for most of the trip. Ideally I want to find a non-annoying solution to keeping my camera at hand, but safe and dry.)
• 5 x kayak/dry bags
• 2 x Berghaus Explorer hiking boots (we both have the same boots, they’re awesome)
• 2 x lightweight Nike trainers

Sleeping & Camping

• 1 x Vango Banshee 3 person tent
• 2 x cheap camping mats
• 2 x Hi-gear 3/4 length self inflating camping mats (well worth the extra weight)
• 2 x Blacks 3-season mummy sleeping bags
• 1 x cheap groundsheet
• 2 x Mammut inflatable pillows
• 2 x LED headlamps

Cooking

We were planning on heating water for coffee but didn’t due to high winds, so didn’t use any of this but would still take it again!

• 1 x Vango compact stove
• 1 x small gas canister
• 2 x sporks
• 2 x falconware enamel mugs
• 1 x mess tin

Accessories

• 1 x Sealskinz waterproof gloves* (worn by me for all of 10 minutes)
• 1 x Walking pole (this proved invaluable for me on the steep downs, and was something I’d uumed and ahhhed about taking)
• 2 x buffs
• 2 x wool hats
• 1 x swiss army knife (essential!)

Food & Drink

• 2 x 2l hydration bladders
• 1 x pack of 20 Pink Grapefruit Zero hydration tablets (these are so good! we put one tablet in our bladders with about 1-1.5l of water each morning)
• 18 x bounce protein balls
• 10 x nakd bars
• 1 x bag of Kenco Milicano
• 6 x tiny milk cartons

Entertainment & Electronics

• 2 x Kindles
• 1 x USB plug
• 1 x iPhone cable
• 1 x battery pack
• 1 x fitbit charge HR
• 2 x iPhones
• 1 x Canon EOSM camera

Kim’s Clothes

• 3 x pairs of walking socks
• 1 x pair of regular socks
• 1 x pair bed socks
• 3 x pairs of underwear (quick drying for washing)
• 3 x sweat wicking tops
• 1 x pair of walking trousers
• 1 x pair of black running tights (I find these really comfortable to walk in, and great for under waterproof over trousers!)
• 1 x pair of waterproof over trousers
• 1 x long-sleeve laying top
• 1 x lightweight fleece
• 1 x Nike sports bra
• 1 x pyjama bottoms
• 1 x vest top for nightware
• 1 x normal t-shirt

Adam’s Clothes

• 3 x pairs of walking socks
• 2 x pair of regular socks
• 4 x pairs of underwear (quick drying for washing)
• 3 x sweat wicking tops

• 1 x fleece
• 1 x pyjama bottoms
• 1 x pyjama t-shirt

Toiletries & Medicines

• 2 x toothbrush

• 1 x small pot of cleanser (that I left in the first B&B, oops!)
• 1 x moisturiser
• 1 x Avene repair cream (this was great for windburn/chapped lips)
• 1 x Sunscreen (spf50)
• 1 x men’s deodorant (I used this too to save on weight)
• 1 x compeed blister stick
• 1 x flannel*
• Various compeed blister plasters
• First aid kit (this one from amazon, plus some sterile saline solution pods)
• Paracetamol
• Ibuprofen
• Antihistamine
• Imodium
• Coldsore Cream
• 2 x ventolin inhalers
• 1 x box of toilet paper

Extras

• 1 x Avon Skin so soft (for insect repellent)
• 1 x mini duct tape
• 1 x pack of tissues
• 1 x Hadrian’s Wall handbook
• 1 x Hadrian’s Wall OS map
• 1 x waterproof map wallet
• 1 x compass*
• 1 x water canteen
• 2 x orange survival bags (didn’t use, but would always carry. Handy for sitting on, keeping warm, using as an emergency dry-bag)
• Kinesio tape (I didn’t use this, but wished I had, I should’ve really strapped my knee after the Housesteads bit of the walk)
• Cash enough for accommodation & food
• ID
• Debit card

For Scout

• 6 x bags of dog food
• 2 x leads
• 1 x spare collar
• 2 x fleece blankets
• 1 x towel
• 20 poop bags
• 1 x musher’s paw wax
• 1 x pair of trixie boots*
• 2 x collapsable dog bowls
• 1 x pack of grated cheese
• 1 x muddy paws jacket
• 1 x pack of dentasticks
• 1 x toy
• 1 x list of vets along the route
• Small pack of babywipes

And that’s it! There wasn’t anything that we wished we’d taken along with us, and we opted not to take a large microfibre towel to save on weight. Luckily we were staying places with towels/towel hire, so we didn’t miss it.

If you’re walking Hadrian’s Wall and don’t want to carry your stuff, there’re several companies who will take your luggage from stop-to-stop for a small fee.
