Top 10: Books on My Winter TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is just what it sounds like. Every Tuesday (or most (I’m forgetful) Tuesdays) I’ll be posting a Top 10 list. This feature is hosted by The Broke and Bookish.

My first Top Ten Tuesday! This Top Ten was last week’s topic, but since no one got around to it, I thought I could give it a shot as an easy list to start with. Compiling this list wasn’t too difficult as I still have a few books sitting on my shelf that I was recommended during my trip to India. You will also be able to tell my next holiday destination is somewhere in South America. I have a bunch of books lined up depicting either the luscious greenery of the Amazon, the dangerous streets driven by poverty or the diverse personalities of the Latinos. So here’s my top ten picks that will hopefully help me to escape the cold this winter.

The Pagoda Tree by Claire Scobie because it addresses Indian history in a light and fictional way, with themes on love and family.

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy because I brought this book for as little as $2 on the streets of Kerala, India, the same place where this book is set.

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga because it integrates two Asian cultures, India and China and because it was recommended to me when I was travelling through India.

City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende because I have always wanted to read a book by this Chilean-American author and this sounds like a good book to start with.

On Mexican Time: A New Life in San Miguel by Tony Cohan because Mexico sounds like such an interesting country.

Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho because I’ve recently studied prostitution in South America at uni and I would like to get to know the personality of a woman living this lifestyle.

Bahia Blues by Yasmina Traboulsi because Brazilian culture is so interesting and from the range of characters within this story it should reveal a good snapshot of the Brazilian lifestyle.

Temple by Matthew Reilly because this book is set in Peru and, perhaps more importantly, I love the way this Australian author writes thrilling adventures.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak because I keep hearing of this book. It has been on my TBR list for years now, hopefully this winter I will actually read it.

South of Darkness by John Marsden because I love this author and because half of this book is set in Australia. I should definitely read more books closer to home.

Have you travelled to India or South America and have any book recommendations? Or have you read any of these books already?
