Classic Hummus Recipe

This Hummus Recipe is a simple and basic Middle Eastern dip that only takes about ten minutes to make. Use a blender or a food processor for best results.

You need a Hummus recipe in your arsenal because homemade hummus tastes one million times better than store bought. You can make it how you like it (extra garlic for me, please!) and have plenty left over to store in your fridge to spread on sandwiches or dip more veggies in.

Making this hummus recipe starts with chicken peas or garbanzo beans (the same thing). I use canned because they are ready to use immediately, but feel free to reconstitute some dried. Throw those into a high powdered blender or food processor. I used a blender because I don’t have room in my tiny NYC kitchen for a food processor AND a blender. Either work just fine.

To your chick peas, add in tahini (sesame paste), garlic, fresh lemon juice, cumin, salt, pepper and a little olive oil to get things going. Once you start to blend, you’ll have to stream in oil as you go. After a while, I switched the oil to water because I didn’t want *that* many calories, but feel free to use all oil. Once it gets going in the blender, blitz until its completely smooth or the consistency you like. I like mine mostly smooth. Taste, adjust seasonings and blitz again briefly.

Spoon into a serving bowl and add a little extra salt, pepper and olive oil. Serve with pita, bread, crackers, veggies or spread onto a sandwich or wrap. All delicious ways to enjoy hummus.

Below are a few more step by step photos with the recipe card at the bottom. Have a great day, friends!!
