With the first official day of summer here, I think an ultimate guide to frozen treats is appropriate!
When I was a kid, summer wasn't complete until we went to the corner dairy stop to get a large soft serve cone (chocolate and vanilla swirl with lots of chocolate jimmies!). The ice cream would drip down my hand, my arm and cover my chin. That was all part of the experience. It wouldn't matter though, because the sprinkler would be in the lawn waiting for me when I got home. Those are my best summertime memories.
While it is so convenient to pick up popsicles and often over-priced ice cream at the grocery store, making your own frozen treats is quite simple and delicious. To get you started, I've compiled a collection of frozen treats just for you. This list is broken down into sections: ice cream, ice cream made without a machine, gelato, sorbets and popsicles. I even cover the equipment you'll need. I really WANT you to make your own ice cream, I certainly hope this guide inspires you to do so!

Gelato, frozen yogurt and sorbet can all be made in the same machine. Hand crank ice cream makers are still around, although not as popular. The main equipment needed for frozen treats are:
