Turn Scrapbook Paper Into Beautiful Home Decor

Thanks to Stampin’ Up! for providing this lovely Painted Blooms Designer Series Paper. It gave me the perfect opportunity to turn scrapbook paper into beautiful home decor.

Have you ever seen scrapbook paper that you knew you wanted, but had no intention of using it for scrapbooking purposes because you didn’t want to cut it up? That’s what happened to me when I saw this gorgeous paper. I knew I had to turn it into something special. It was so pretty I wanted to put it on display, so I could look at it all the time!

To make this scrapbook paper into something sturdy enough for hanging, I decided to use Mod Podge to apply it to a wooden board. Honestly, I have to be the last person in the world to try this, but I guess I just didn’t have the right inspiration until this paper came along.

I trimmed a tiny bit off of my paper, so that it would fit my board. This is a good place to measure twice, cut once and not guestimate… like I did. You will see in a picture below I trimmed a tiny bit too much off of one sheet. I don’t think anyone will notice when it is hung, but I still felt pretty dumb for a few minutes. It just dawned on me that this is the second time this week I have told you about one of my silly mistakes, I guess at least you know I’m human.

Thankfully, I painted my board first which made my cutting mistake a little less noticeable. Once the paint dried on my board, I applied a layer of Mod Podge to the board and a small amount to the back of the paper. I used the Mod Podge specifically for paper because I have read that it keeps the paper from yellowing over time. Which I definitely didn’t want to happen to this lovely paper.

When I had the paper position on the board, I went to smoothing. I knew this step was very important, so I used the Mod Podge Tool to make sure I got out all of the air bubbles.

I let it dry for about 30 minutes before adding a coat of Mod Podge on top, and then I freaked out! After I applied the top coat my paper started to bubble up. I was so upset because I knew I had smoothed the crap out of this thing, but I quickly called a friend who assured me this was ok. To my relief it really did turn out ok, once it dried the bubbles went away. I decided to do a second coat on top and it did the same thing, but again they disappeared when it was dry. So, if there is anyone in the world besides me who hasn’t tried Mod Podge before, now you know it might bubble up and that is ok.

Once my panic had subsided and the project was completely dried (my craft life is dramatic), I sanded the edges with a extra fine 400 grit sandpaper. You can also use sandpaper over the top if any areas of your project feel tacky.

I’m so excited that this project turned out, and I didn’t mess up this beautiful Painted Blooms Designer Series Paper. I’m planning on using these two pieces of DIY home decor in our bedroom, one on each side of the bed above our night stands. We have wood walls and I think the bright white background will look so good against our dark walls.

Even though I’m probably the last person to try something like this, I hope you found some inspiration. If nothing else at least you know now where to find some beautiful scrapbook paper… Stampin’ Up!
