How to Get Manga Eyelashes

I’m one of those people who sees a magazine ad for a beauty product and then immediately goes out and buys in. See- those magazine ads really do work! If the product has a cool feature, nice photos, luxe packaging or even a model that I find pretty, I’m more inclined to buy the product or try the beauty trend they are advertising. This is exactly what happened when I saw the ad for the L’Oreal Paris Mega Volume Miss Manga Mascara. This specific product is the first, to my knowledge, to be marketed specifically as the manga eyelash look. The flexible brush has a unique conical shape that catches those hard to reach lashes with an incredibly even application.

You may have heard the term ‘manga’ before, but if not, I’ll define it. It’s basically Japanese comics. In these comics, female characters are often drawn with long, thick, spiky lashes. This is to make them look extra feminine- almost in an exaggerated way. It’s actually not all that far off from real life- I mean, who wouldn’t give up their right arm to look like a Disney princess in real life? If you want these gorgeous, extra girly lashes, here are a few products to use and steps to take.

Nyx Cosmetics Eye Shadow Base | Sephora Eyelash Curler | L’Oreal Paris Mega Volume Miss Manga Mascara | Sephora Lift Off Lash Comb | Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

To start off, you’ll want to prime your lids and lashes. This keeps the product where it should be, and will prevent the mascara from wiping off onto your eyelids or cheeks. Next, apply a white-tinted eye shadow or liner. This will make the black lashes and mascara really “pop” off your face. Since manga-inspired eyelashes are super noticeable, you want to skip any dramatic or dark eye makeup. Opt for a simple, thin line of black eyeliner applied very closely to your lid in addition to the white shadow mentioned above.

Then you’ll curl your lashes- this is key! Curl from root to tip, clamping down 3 times at each level. Then apply your mascara of choice- the L’Oreal one I mentioned above was created especially for this look, so I suggest trying that one- slowly, starting by wiggling deep at the root all the way to the tips of your lashes. You’ll need 2-3 thick coats to really get the manga look. To prevent clumpiness, use a mascara wand to wipe off excess between coats. This works to separate and define each individual lash to get the manga makeup look.
