Craigslist Kitchen Hutch

We have been lightening and brightening up our home over the last year, but with the coming arrival of this little girl here (lying on the floor), we kicked our painting into high gear. Dog fur and painting just don't mix.

One of the changes I wanted to make in our kitchen was to find a larger hutch for this area. Every piece of furniture I own is a working piece, and needs to be beautiful and useful at the same time. I have a set of Transferware I found at a yardsale for $20 that I want to keep displayed. I also have many other serving pieces that I constantly use, but are also pretty to look at. I have been looking for just the right hutch for this spot. It had to be the exact size and just as importantly, had to be the right price. I knew I would be painting it, so the finish didn't matter. I finally found this on Craigslist for $150. I offered $100 and she accepted. I had to borrow a truck and my son to get it home.
Here is the smaller old hutch that I'd had for 25 years. It was 80's orangy oak. It actually looks really cute in this photo, but trust me, it wasn't.

We started to paint it, along with our kitchen cabinets (but that is another post), and realized a spray painter would be well worth the investment. It was. But we made the HUGE mistake of not covering EVERYTHING, including the garage floor.

The color with used was Cotton Fluff by Behr. It is a creamy white with yellow undertones. We are going white, but not bright white. I think that would be too drastic of a change for us, and our house is old, so creamy whites seem to work better here.

I love the number of pieces I can display on these shelves.

One of my favorite things about this hutch is this little shelf which is perfect for quart size Mason jars.

We replaced the hinges and handles with these from the Martha Stewart collection at Home Depot.
