Crochet with Kath – Star Stitch mittens

Made from exclusive, hand-dyed soft merino wool from The Yarn Collective, Kath Webber’s treasured mittens are warm and stylish, perfect for those last crisp days of winter. Use Anna’s Star Stitch tutorial or follow the steps below.
You will need:
- 1 x 100g skein of Bloomsbury DK by the Yarn Collective, in Oz (106)
- 4mm hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
Abbreviations (all are in UK crochet terms):
- BLdc – back loop double crochet
- Ch – chain dc
- Dc – double crochet
- Htr – half treble
- Ss – slip stitch
- Yoh – yarn over hook

Wind your beautiful yarn into a ball or use a swift and winder to prepare the yarn before you begin. Don’t forget to Instagram the heck out of it first. (hashtag #theyarncollective)
Make 15ch to begin. For the foundation row, start in the 2nd ch from the hook and make 1dc in each ch to end. Turn. (14sts)
To graft the ends together to form the cuff, place the two long edges together, matching up the stitches. Make 1ch, position the yarn behind the edge at the back. Insert the hook through the front piece, under the back loop of the dc and catch the loop with the hook, and bring it back to the front.
Now turn the piece inside out so the slip stitched seam is on the inside of the cuff. To make the main mitt, rotate the cuff to work along the row ends. Make 1ch (does not count as a stitch), then make 1dc in each row end.
Continue to work 1dc in each row end around and join with a ss to the first dc. You should now have 36 sts.
Star stitch round 1: Make 2ch. Insert the hook into the 2nd ch from the hook, pull a loop through, insert the hook into the first ch, pull a loop through, and now insert the hook and pull a loop back through each of the next 2 dc. You will have 5 loops on your hook
Pull a loop back through, then slide the hook under the last strand of the star and pull a loop back through.
Now insert the hook into the same dc as the last strand of the previous star, pull a loop through, then repeat with each of the next 2 dc so that you now have 6 loops on your hook.
Take the yoh and pull through all 6 loops to close, then make 1ch. Repeat around the row of dc stitches, make 1htr in the final dc (where the last star stitch loop is) then slip stitch to the first st made to close.
You’ll now turn the mitt and work in the opposite direction for Star Stitch round 2. Make 1ch, then 2dc in the centre of each star around, and slip stitch to the first dc to join the round.
Rounds 3-10: Repeat Star Stitch rounds 1 and 2 three more times, then once more, but do not join at the end of round 10.
Rounds 11-15: Repeat star stitch rounds 1 and 2, but do not join at the end of each round. Instead, turn and work back in the opposite direction, leaving a gap for the thumb hole.
Round 16 is the same as round 2- join at the end of the round, then repeat rounds 1 and 2 three more times, joining at the end of each round. Fasten off and sew in your ends.
