10 MOVIES TO WATCH THIS AUTUMN
Did I already mention that if fashion didn’t exist, I’d probably become a movie critic? The cinema is one of my biggest passions! Check which movies I’m going to go back to this autumn and… make sure you watch them all!
1. THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (2015) | COMEDY, THRILLER
The latest movie directed by one of my favorite directors. Guy Richie proves that spy movies don’t have to be serious and predictable at all In The Man from U.N.C.L.E. he applies the irony and lightness that is so typical for his movies and that would make even the most pompous story charming The movie is about two agents of opposite organizations: the American CIA (Napoleon Solo) and Russian KGB (Illya Kuryakin). The problem is, that this time, instead of fighting, they have to work hand in hand, in order to protect the world from an atomic threat from the Nazis. They’re helped by a beautiful (and feisty) partner – Gaby Teller. As it’s typical for such a movie, the guys have Indiana Jones’s physical condition, 007 agent’s cleverness, and charm that no women could resist It’s good to watch it even for the dialogues between the two spies, awesome outfits (Tom Ford himself contributed to the process of creating them) and its amazing production.
Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki
Directed by: Guy Ritchie
2. EX MACHINA (2015) | THRILLER, SCI-FI
If you decided not to see the movie thinking that you hate science fiction, try to change your mind as the fall comes. It’s a really fascinating story about how dangerous playing God can be. The plot tries to foresee the future of mankind and seeks the border between artificial intelligence and what’s typical of men. What would happen if machines started to love? The movie is about a young IT specialist, Caleb, who, as a reward for a won contest organized by his company is given a chance to spend a week in his boss’s, Nathan’s, house and help him in his research. It turns out that Nathan is working on a fascinating robot, Ava, which reacts like a man in all kinds of situations. Ex Machina, due to its minimalist scenography, electronic soundtrack, subtle acting and not that many characters is an intimate movie to watch in total silence. But it doesn’t make it less interesting in any way! A Swedish actress, Alicia Vikander deserves a standing ovation, as she dealt perfectly with her role of a so hard to depict, robot.
Starring: Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander, Sonoya Mizuno
Directed by: Alex Garland
3. SUGAR MAN (2012) | DOCUMENTAL, MUSICAL
It’s one out of few documentaries that really moved me. Even now, when I hear the moving soundtrack of Sugar Man, I’m shivering. Why? Even though it’s hard to believe, the story didn’t happen on a screenwriter’s desk, but happened in the real world! The movie tells a story of Sixto Rodriguez, a young talented musician who disappeared after having released his second album. Even though noone in the US music business cared about him, his songs became the voice of the generation in South Africa. His wise texts were being repeated, and legends about his death have been created. When after years of tough search some journalists finally found Rodriguez, it turned out that he hardly makes a living, and… has no idea about his popularity! Do I have to mention that when he visited Poland in 2014, the tickets to his concert had been sold in less than an hour? An honest and moving story which should be watched witch someone close beside us.
Starring: Sixto Rodriguez, Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman, Craig Bartholomew-Strydrom, Dennis Coffey
Directed by: Malik Bandjelloul
4. SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD (2010) | FANTASY, COMEDY, ACTION
The movie is based on a cartoon, “Scot Pilgrim”, and you should definitely see it, even if: a) you’re not really into cartoons, b) you wrote your school-leaving exams years ago Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a real rollercoaster – a bit of comedy, a bit of parody, something from a fantasy movie, and a lot of… romantic drama The movie tells a story of a 22 year old boy who joins a garage band who struggles between his (not so liked by his friends) girlfriend, and Ramona, with whom he falls in love with at first sight. Dynamic dialogues and fast pace won’t leave you bored. Everything is served in a colorful pop art form with many references to computer games. Invite your friends and instead of going to a party, watch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World together!
Starring: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Ellen Wong
Directed by: Edgar Wright
5. THE DRESSMAKER (2015)| DRAMA, COMEDY
The Dressmaker is a real masterpiece of Kate Winslet’s acting skills. I’ve liked her since her appearance in the cult „Titanic”. Jocelyn Moorhouse’s movie (she’s known from How To Make an American Quilt starring Wiona Ryder) is an eclectic mix of movie kinds: a western, melodrama, comedy and grotesque. It tells a tale of an Australian woman, Tilly Dunnage, who after living in Paris for 25 years as a well-known fashion designer decides to go back to her small family town, where many years ago she’s been charged with a tragic accident. Will the Dressmaker face the demons of her past with her head up high, or will she try to take a revenge on her friends? One thing is for sure: nothing will be the same for the citizens of Dungatar anymore. Plus you’ll have a lot of fun observing how people’s character may change according to what they’re wearing The outfits are stunning. As for me, it’s a total movie must have for autumn!
Starring: Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth, Judy Davis, Caroline Goodall
Directed by: Jocelyn Moorhouse
6. THE GREAT GATSBY (2013) | MELODRAMA
A great option for the fans of the literary talent of F. Scott Fitzgerald (the author of The Great Gatsby book which has been dramatized by Baz Luhrmann), Leonadro DiCaprio’s acting and… big fashion " class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> After all, the outfits have been designed by Miucca Prada herself! Delicate crystal embroideries, chic 20-ies accessories, feathers and retro hairstyles totally catch the eye. But be careful, besides that stunning kaleidoscope, the movie is much more – it’s a story about the loneliness of a millionaire, Jay Gatsby, his unhappy love for his former lover, Daisy (portrayed by the talented and charming Carey Mulligan), and about the hard times in which they had to live. The director makes it all witty by setting hiphop music with pictures from the 20-ies, showing us that nothing’s really changed since then " class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Definitely a movie for beauty lovers and nostalgic romantics!
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton
Directed by: Baz Luhrmann
7. GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (2014) | DRAMA, COMEDY
No wonder that Wes Anderson has been inspiring filmmakers and fashion designers for many years now. Did you see the last year’s autumn collection of Gucci? It’s a tribute to the characteristic aesthetics of the director " class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> His movies are famous for not only amazing acting, but also old-fashioned scenography, retro costumes and characteristic sugary color scheme. You’ll find everything in Grand Budapest Hotel. It tells a story of the connoisseur of a magical hotel in Zubrovka, a fictional country in Eastern Europe Doesn’t it sound intriguing? Gustave H. (the amazing Ralph Finnes) starts having trouble when he inherits an expensive painting after Madame D (Tilda Swifton). Unexpected turns of events, a lot of fun, and perfect details. This movie is a total must see (even just for the captivating character of Zero, the faithful subordinate of connoisseur) " class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> And for dessert – my Görlitz review, where Grand Budapest Hotel was filmed!
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Tony Revolori, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody
Directed by: Wes Anderson
8. LABOR DAY (2013) | DRAMA
It’s the second movie featuring Kate Winslet that has found its place on my top 10 fall movies list. Well, I’m a total fan of her talent! In Labor Day she captivated me with her multidimensional part of Adele, Henry’s mother, for whom even everyday shopping is a hard try to face reality. Their boring and repetitive life is interrupted by a fugitive, Frank. He takes over her house using force, but as you can suspect, in this story nothing is as it seems. The relationship, which, as it might seem, begins in a brutal way, turns out to be something completely different. It’s a beautiful movie that is full of warmth and optimism, a movie about the search for happiness and understanding one another, with love in the background. It’s perfect to watch with your beloved one, or… with your beloved friend
Starring: Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffith, Tobey Maguire
Directed by: Jason Reitman
9. TRUMBO (2015) | DRAMA, BIOGRAPHY
A biography of a well-known American screenwriter from the 50-ies, Dalton Trumbo, who gets signed up on the Hollywood „black list” due to communist beliefs. His tough character and sharp tongue are the cause of all his problems. The movie conveys the spirit of those times perfectly, the acting is amazing (especially Bryan Cranston and Helen Mirren) and the proportions are well-balanced. Trumbo is neither a movie about politics, nor a transparent story about the problems of an artist who got tangled into a worldview game. A well-produced and fascinating story about what might happen to one if they try to live according to their beliefs.
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren, Elle Fanning
Directed by: Jay Roach
10. SERIAL (BAD) WEDDINGS (2014) | COMEDY
An amazingly funny French comedy that’ll make you laugh in the gloomiest November days The daughters of a wealthy and conservative couple get married. Each of them marries a man of a different religion, which starts a series of situational problems regarding prejudice and stereotypes. In the times in which it’s hard to speak about religion and politics without involving any emotions, it’s good to relax and laugh about the tragicomic outcomes of foreign cultures clashes. No wonder that the Serial (Bad) Weddings movie turned out to have become a box office hit – it’s been watched by more than 17 million people. Make sure you become one of them this fall!
Starring: Christian Clavier, Chantal Lauby, Ary Abittan, Medi Sadoun
Directed by: Phillipe de Chauveron
