Season 4 Wrap Up

As we wrap Season 4 of Fixer Upper, Chip and I want to say thank you for the continued support and encouragement. It was a season filled with laughs, tears, and lots of unique homes. We are also thankful for our clients- they remain the core of why we do what we do. Every home and family has a special story to tell and we love having the opportunity to serve them.

Repurposing a piece from the past is always going to be one of my favorite aspects of design. I love mixing old with new, and that will never change. Here are a few of my favorite antique finds from season 4.

There isn't much I love more than finding a good set of antique doors. Luckily, this season I found lots!

A cool way to repurpose doors if you don’t have a space, is in built-in shelving, like we did here in the Bufton project.

Adding an antique door in this space warmed up all of the white in this living room.

There’s no easier way to add interest to a kitchen than a good set of antique pantry doors.

We found these doors in the shed in the backyard of the flip house. Turns out they were original to the home! We redid the glass and installed them as pantry doors.

The antique doors in the bakery were refinished by our friend and favorite carpenter, Clint Harp.

The brick in this space was original to the structure, so it was important to me that we keep it. This little building in front of the Silos property actually predates the physical grain Silos on the property! So technically this whole property was repurposing an antique.

An old chicken feeder turned organizational bin was perfect for this playroom!

Architectural pieces, like this one, are some of my favorite antique finds. This could’ve been used in just about any space for any style, but I loved it here as the focal point to this hutch.

The home's original hardwoods were repurposed into a feature wall.

The antique map from the Matsumoto house was the perfect piece to frame these built-in shelves around. It fit here so perfectly that it was almost as if it were made for this space.

I love this genuine antique sign from the Morgan project! These are the types of pieces that if you ever find, you have to snatch up—even if you don’t think you have the right place for it! They’re too beautiful to pass up!

I’d been saving these antique corbels for a while, and when it was time to design a focal point for the Severn’s living room, I knew they’d be a perfect fit for this mantel.

This stone was repurposed from the exterior of the flip house. I loved keeping this little piece of the original home.

Here are some of my favorite unique features from season 4. From double sided fireplaces to scalloped walls, we had fun adding unexpected character into every home.

This kitchen backsplash is one of my favorites from this season. Each individual tile was hand-painted.

These beams from the Ignacio project made this living and kitchen area feel like one cohesive space.

The console table in the entryway of the Eberle house was made by our friend Clint Harp! I love the unique shape of the legs on this table.

We did a few stucco fireplaces this season, but this was a favorite. I love how clean and polished it made the Barker living room look.

These custom windows along the back of the house combined with this fireplace made the Wixsom living space one of my favorites from season 4!

Room walls made out of sliding glass doors? The Wixsom project did not disappoint.

I could list so many things I love about this kitchen. The minimalistic open shelving units, and dark lower cabinets and appliances gave this space such a neat vibe. Perfect for the Wixsom family!

This scalloped wall that Chip built for the Morgans' daughters' room brought the perfect amount of whimsy.

The Morgan family's son's room was built for sleepovers. I loved designing this custom bunk bed and this raw skinnylap!

These windows from the Morgan project were the centerpiece of the entire home. Wrapping them in cedar trim really set them apart.

There was a weird closet here that wasn't needed, so Chip and I designed and installed this daybed/reading nook to replace it.

This fireplace was beautiful all on its own, but when we decided to make it double sided (see next photo for the other side!) it completely changed the feel of the rooms and made them feel cohesive.

Booth seating was a space-saving feature we did in a few of this season’s projects. For homes without a built in dining area, this unique idea combined the island with the table and allowed enough space for both.

The flip house fireplace was stucco painted to look like concrete! Why not real concrete? Stucco isn’t near as heavy. This technique, combined with vertical shiplap, gave this room personality.

The Bufton kitchen was a large open space, so we decided to do a double island. This was a unique way to add bar seating and break up the room.

We love shiplap, that’s no secret. This season I found myself wondering if we could push the envelope with it, so we added different styles that matched the personalities of our clients. Rather than sticking with the classic horizontal wide plank (which I still love) we also added vertical shiplap, SKINNYlap (a more narrow version), vertical skinnylap, shiplap on the ceiling and even shiplap painted black. Here are some of my favorite uses from this season.

The office in the flip house was already such a unique shape that we wanted to accentuate that with this stained shiplap ceiling.

I love a good shiplap ceiling! This matched the office space upstairs and went perfect with the feel of the room.

The reclaimed beadboard ceiling from the Matsumoto house wasn't exactly "shiplap" but I do love the whimsical feeling it brought to this little girl's room.

Reclaimed wood from the Matsumoto's original "shack" structure's siding made this master bedroom special for the family.

Vertical skinnylap is one of our new favorites! I love the way it brought dimension and layers to this living space.

Black shiplap...this is one that Chip was unsure about. But the finished product matched the feel of the rest of the Wixsom home perfectly!

The house boat master bedroom was so small that wide-plank shiplap would've overwhelmed it. This stained skinnylap was perfect and added the modern vibe the owner was hoping for.

Gray shiplap wainscoting added dimension to this powder room without overwhelming the small space.

Each client we work with has a different design style, way of living, and unique story. Part of the fun of designing for specific clients is customizing their home to work for their current season of life. Here are a few of my favorite custom projects we worked on this season.

The Eberle bunk room made a perfect spot for this family's kids and extended family to stay when visiting.

Our very first dog shower...this definitely made this home custom for the Chapman family.

The Phipps family needed a playroom and a guest room so....

We built a murphy bed!

This custom-painted tile for the Barker family was such a unique addition to personalize the heart of this home.

A few fun things we incorporated into our designs this season were wall murals. This laundry mural from the Graham house was designed by a friend and really brought this space a unique element that set it apart.

A member of our marketing team drew this "Nana's Kitchen" sign especially for Mrs. Beachum.

This laundry mural was from the Ignacio project. It's quite a bit smaller than the Graham mural, but I love the character that painting it on brick gave it.

This is the ultimate bunkbed built for the Matsumoto family's little boy who loves adventure.

I designed this sign with Jimmy Don for the Matsumoto family's outdoor patio.

This island's countertops were actually from a bowling lane gifted to the Severnses by a family member! When you look closely, you can see the lane lines and nicks.

The exterior is our client’s first impression of their new home, and this season we brought you some dramatic and fun reveals. The goal here is always to give the family a home that reflects their personal style. The initial exterior reveal is one of my favorite parts of the show, because the looks on our clients’ faces says it all!

The Matsumoto home was by far our most dramatic reveal to-date! I still can’t believe the Matsumotos went for it!

The Eberle family requested lots of outdoor seating, so we created a wrap around porch with plenty of room for rocking chairs. To finish out the look, we added cedar beams and matching sets of french doors.

This house was called the giraffe house for good reason. We added stucco siding to tone down the exterior stone’s pattern and built a dormer to add dimension to the roofline.

I love the symmetry of the Graham’s exterior. The brick skirt and black shutters create a welcoming feeling for guests.

The clean lines of the Wixsom home’s exterior perfectly reflects their modern style.

So what’s next? We started filming the construction for Season 5 in December, so we are right in the middle of demo, design, and crazy reveals. We are also filming Fixer Upper: Behind the Design, which will air after each episode in season 5 to give you a little more design perspective. I love this, because we finally get to give y’all a glimpse of what happens beyond the camera!
