Screen freedom | Go fishing

Instead of screens today, why not… go fishing?

Most of us live pretty close to a waterway that permits fishing and it’s easier to get started than you think. A couple of summers ago I found myself fishing with the kids down the coast of NSW. Having never really fished before and no real idea of what we were doing, we managed just fine. Of course, if we actually caught something large enough to keep, I might have felt a bit differently! So far, despite numerous attempts, we have specialised in the dreaded puffer fish and the occasional too-small perch or whiting.

It hasn’t seemed to bother the kids, though, so I urge you to buy a cheap rod or reel (they are under $10 at K-Mart, BigW or Target) and cast a line! This is an activity that keeps even the youngest kids amused for hours, something I’ve never quite understood. In fact, the kids have always had a much longer attention-span for fishing than I have…

You will need a recreational fishing license to catch fish in most states, they are not expensive and you can get one here, just click on your state for the link:

NSW | VIC | WA | TAS | You do not require a recreational fishing license in SA, QLD, the NT or ACT.

Are you a fishing kind of family?
