This concert was part of an 18-day Scandinavian tour Barbirolli took the Hallé on starting in June 1963. They stopped in Bergen and Odda in Norway, the Stockholm Festival and Gothenburg, Copenhagen and at the Sibelius Festival in Helsinki. Barbirolli also programmed the Mahler Symphony No. 4 in Bergen.
Orchestras rarely sound better than when they have been meticulously prepared for a high profile tour and this concert is ample proof. This Sibelius 5, while not quite on the same exalted level as the amazing Sibelius 2 with the BSO, is a terrific performance - quite a tonic in terms of tempo to the two Celibidache performances posted elsewhere on the blog.
