Sir John Barbirolli Conducts Beethoven's Eroica - 1965 Proms

FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN Symphony No. 83 H I/83, "La Poule" LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3 in E-flat, Op. 55, "Eroica" CARL NIELSEN Symphony No. 4, Op. 29 FS 76, "Inextinguishable" Hallé Orchestra SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI, conductor Recorded Royal Albert Hall, London on 30 July 1965
Wonderful performances of three symphonies which Sir John was to record with great success. The Beethoven and Nielsen commercial recordings have been widely available but lesser-known is his 1949 recording of the Haydn 83rd. It is a beautiful recording, and the disc - with symphonies 88 & 96 - is still available on Dutton or the 83rd symphony alone can be had as mp3 downloads from Amazon.
Sir John's commercial recording of the Eroica has been among my favorites since I was a mere whelp. It is good to hear him live in the this symphony with his regular band.
